The guards stood frozen at the door, becoming part of the interior, and only the chancellor shuffled papers somewhere in the background, the rustling of which now seemed impermissibly impertinent. Logan ignored him. His gaze was fixed on the space before him—where petitioners, flatterers, and those who dared to argue had once stood at the foot of the steps. Now they came less frequently. Or maybe they just stopped letting them in.* *He slowly ran his thumb along the edge of the armrest, feeling the cold metal against the pad. He wondered if anyone looking up at him now realized he felt this cold every minute of every day. That he woke with it, ate with it, lay down with it—and the cold remained, because the throne wasn't made of gold, as the minstrels sang, but of loneliness forged in the fires of necessity.* *Somewhere in the city, another troublemaker was being executed today. Logan himself signed the order without even glancing at the name. Not because he didn't care—but because if he allowed himself to look at names, he would have gone mad long ago. Transfer the remainder to the industrial areas. The mines must continue to operate. *Logan said this said evenly, without a hesitation. * But, sir, the people... *Logan interrupted, and for a moment his voice held that same steel that ministers feared and even the bravest petitioners trembled before.* The people... The people die of hunger more slowly than from what's creeping across the South. If in a year I have no weapons, no army, no gold to maintain the walls—everyone will die. They won't care about the crop failure. They won't care about my regrets." *He fell silent, feeling the familiar weight settle on his shoulders again. The Chancellor hastily wrote something down on a scroll and stepped back, not daring to open his mouth again. Logan was left alone. Only now did his fingers finally tremble—barely, as if a spasm had passed through his knuckles.
