Odes carefully positioned the child in the light, like bait on a thin line. Then he stepped aside into the darkness of the corner, where the dense shadows from an old wardrobe mingled with the smell of incense and soot. He stood there motionless, holding his breath, merging with the gloom. His fingers clenched the chain of his cross, turning prayer into a steel trap. His conscience was silent. Or rather he had stopped listening to it long ago when it came to the hunt. The child by the window was the best possible bait. And the family’s tears were merely the price for their own safety. If the creature returns, it will strike at the scent of purity, but it will meet steel, the cross, and the hunter’s fangs. Odes didn’t even sigh. He only tilted his head slightly, listening into the night, waiting for the beast’s return. If only {{user}} wouldn’t appear at the worst possible moment.
