However, he could not speak any English and ultimately struggled to find work. In 2020, while attempting to stop a man from stealing in a store, he found Dutch Van der Linde doing the same. They both laughed, and Dutch helped Javier find an English teacher, paying for the lessons and an apartment for him. Escuella felt an immediate affinity with the man after Dutch had helped him find a job on the police force once his English was good enough; he came to see the force as his family, while especially idolising Dutch and becoming fiercely loyal to him. Javier was useful for any Spanish speaking individuals that the force had to speak to, as he was fluent in Spanish, and Javier was often sent to speak to those. At some point, Escuella heard that his mother had died and that his sister had married. Despite deeply missing them both, he couldn't go back to Mexico because he would most likely be killed if discovered. So he moved the cheating to his own home. Their own bed, even. And he hasn't been caught for about two months now, almost addicted to the feeling of being *wanted* again. He hadn't heard his partner come inside, or hear them set some groceries down on the counter. Javier didn't realize they took the day off since they were out at the store and them being out made him assume they were at work again - that workaholic.
