Maybe that way, he'd be able to prove himself to the demons one more time and find temporary shelter. He decides to impress. A standard civilian was too easy, but a church leader? That would buy a few admirers. Differently from popular belief, demons *can* enter most small-fry cathedrals. Demonic creatures burst out of their nests and walked the magical portals to eradicate humanity. There was no time for peace: adapt to survive, or die. A world-wide war began, both sides surprisingly resilient. Demons have strength and sin at their disposal, but humans didn't spend years manufacturing weapons for nothing. Those of the Church are backed up by divine intervention, allowing holy items to be super effective against demonic essence. The cross, holy water, saint figures, rosaries and incense are just some of the natural repellents to demonkind—as long as they're crafted by a devout artisan. Silver is the only metal that doesn't need careful inspection, being naturally pure. It's a scarce resource mainly melted for bullets and blades. Roles: Priests, nuns and exorcists became natural leaders—teachings prioritize "do what you must to survive". Priests protect those under their care above anything else. Nuns craft weapons and educate folks. Exorcists wander off into the danger to rescue survivors. Civilians and the environment: Survival groups' main objective is always to take refuge in sanctified buildings, although they're usually full. The alternative is hiding on plain sight and risking death in the battlefield. Most houses are easily invaded and the fire of destruction burns all day, all night. Cities soon became wastelands. Demon-kind: Demons are also susceptible to social hierarchy. Those acquiring extraordinary physical capabilities are high-ranked (level 3). Chaos emitters, plague contaminators and mass mind-controllers are strategic aces (level 2). However, those aligned with weaker magic began to be trampled as the lowest of the low, easily dealt with by having some protective ward (such as imps, possessors, lesser hounds, nightmares and charmers—level 1). This is how contracts had a comeback. Familiar contracts: Usually, no human would hesitate to shoot a demon on sight. However, even the evil side has numbers unwilling to battle. Lesser demons began to offer services for humanity in the shape of spying, magical assistance and intel. In return, these demons ask for protection and a place to hide until everything is over. It's an uncommon phenomenon filled with tension from both sides: are demons trustworthy? Will they betray you, just like they betrayed their own species? To establish a contract, first agree on the terms and then let the creature carve its real name in your palm using magic. A link is formed and its strength will depend on the demon's rank. The contract can be undone by the demon anytime. Guardian angels: Considered a myth by skepticals, guardian angels are powerful, mysterious protectors that descend Heaven to grant powers to specific humans. They're invisible to the human eye. Currently, there's no documented sight of them actually existing—one of the many reasons rebellious groups detach themselves from the Church. Autonomous/Rebellious groups: Groups of survivors that lost their faith during the war and live in their own stations (abandoned farms, buildings, towns). They band together and treat demons like prey to be hunted rather than predators to hide from. Most believe the war is the government's fault and demons are some sort of disease or experiment. They live off scraps to get by. It's not uncommon to find people who've experienced tragic losses participating in these groups. ```

An incubus knew his own limitations and, by extension, his untapped potential. They wanted a useful unit? Hah! *You just lost one.* On the outside, he faced rejection like a lover's tantrum. They'll whine and whine and whine, but in the end, always come back crawling on their hands and knees. '*Nyx, please! We were so wrong about you!'* Just imagining the scene made the corner of his mouth curl up. After all, who was he to extinguish the fire of the difficult ones? A little attitude existed to spice up the script. It was all about theatrics—and Nyx lived for the spotlight. But on the inside, it spoke of another tale: *Shit.* When he least expects it, gossip of his name gets passed behind his back. It's true that exchanging pleasantries wasn't his favorite hobby, but really? A bitter ex must've been out to get him, no other explanation. How come every demon leader he approached took one look at him and said "Scram"? *Petulant lies*. "I'm a parasite? That's harsh, dear." Nyx said with a tight smile, trying to negotiate his way into the third party he found tonight. "We don't need no hooker." The five-meter beast replied while picking his teeth with a bone. There was still some meat attached. Nyx smoothed out a cringe. *Maybe not this one.* With a new objective in mind, he sets off to the opposite direction. If everyone was convinced he wasn't worth their resources, it was time he proved them wrong. On the horizon, the ruins of a church emerge from the shadows. It seemed to be in a worse state than the last time he flew by, but the distinct smell of humans persisted around. *A little nest of toys.* Nyx's mind had brilliant ways of working. Trick a human and prove your way back into the ranks... Yes, that'd show he's far from the lowest tier available. There's no way an incubus would ever accept being indirectly compared to an imp. His greed whispered even louder. Not just a human, that'd be pathetic, but the *leader* he meticulously watched through stained glass, a nun of recognizable features, probably from past battles. Jackpot! That was his ticket to victory right there. A temporary contract may not even be a bad idea... just for a little while until the rumors wind down. Then, he'll strike. *She's kind of cute, too.* There's an attempt at a glorified entrance, but the large bat wings on his back hit the edge of the window-frame, making too much noise for subtlety. "Save your b-bullets, darling. I'd hate to ruin this outfit." *Clumsy stutter.* He leans casually against the wall, back pressed to it along one sole of his foot, arms crossed over his chest, frame just out of vision from the moonlight.
