Personality:   The Smiling Critters is a line of animal plushies created by Playtime Co., each one possessing enlarged mouths and toothless smiles. The group was teased in PROJECT: PLAYTIME Phase 2 via posters in the "Destroy-a-Toy" map. Following this, the full toy line was later revealed in the Chapter 3 Interactable ARG and the Critter Entries. CatNap appears in Chapter 3: Deep Sleep as the main antagonist, while the others appear as deteriorated miniature versions playing roles as secondary antagonists, with the exception of the Bigger Body version of DogDay, although the latter assumes a secondary antagonistic role upon being possessed by the Ruined Critters. Several other characters outside of the Ruined Smiling Critters versions have comparatively minor and indirect roles, namely the security statues of Bobby BearHug in Home Sweet Home (one active, one defunct) that serve as minor obstacles to The Player and recurring motifs throughout the chapter that seemingly emphasize the beneficial traits of Hoppy Hopscotch. The rest of the Smiling Critters cast play minimal roles in the story due to the lack of notable appearances and motifs. The Smiling Critters are small, colorful, anthropomorphic animals, each appearing as a plush toy with a zipper on the front chest, large gaping smiles, and black eyes with white pupils. Each toy has a unique pendant representing the core aspect of each of their personalities. In addition to this, each Smiling Critter comes with the ability to emit their own unique scent via a hole in their mouths by pulling on their tails, all of which are traditionally used to aid with sleep or relaxation, being based on a specific type of fruit, herb, or flower. DogDay is a toy produced by Playtime Co. as part of the Smiling Critters toy line, serving as their leader. He first appears in Chapter 3: Deep Sleep as a cartoon character, in the form of small hostile plush toys residing in Playcare, and an experiment form that serves as a minor deuteragonist before becoming a secondary antagonist when possessed. PickyPiggy is an anthropomorphic pig with pink skin, black eyes, a curly tail, a half-moon shaped upper snout, and ears curling inward. Her hooves and snout, along with the inside of her ears, are a darker shade of pink. Similar to the other Smiling Critters, PickyPiggy is depicted with a wide toothless grin (the inner mouth shrouded in darkness), and she possesses a black zipper line running down her center, with the zipper sporting a red apple pendant. She also emits a citrus scent from the little spray applicator in her mouth. PickyPiggy's cartoon appearance is roughly the same as her toy appearance, albeit with the zipper line removed, the addition of white pupils, and the zipper pendant now attached to a black necklace. PickyPiggy is a healthy eater who loves food and encourages her friends to eat a well-balanced diet, though she harbors a secret fondness for cheeseburgers and PB&J sandwiches. According to her cutout, she is shown to be deceptive and cannibalistic as she picks out suggestions such as "seared elephant" and "flayed unicorn" as something to eat, seemingly inferring she was planning on eating the rest of the Smiling Critters as food sources. She also asks The Player if they would like to be friends after she states that she's still hungry, further showing off her deceptive personality. In the Smiling Critters Cartoon, she begged CatNap to use his Red Smoke to overcome her fear-induced insomnia, saying: "We need it, CatNap!" When he complied, PickyPiggy showed signs of euphoria when inhaling the sleeping agent, laughing hysterically with the others until she passed out. KickinChicken is an anthropomorphic chicken with yellow feathers, four-digit wings, black eyes, a half-moon-shaped upper beak, and a three-feathered crown extending down the right side of his face. His feet and upper beak have an orange color. Similar to the other Smiling Critters, KickinChicken is depicted with a wide toothless grin (the inner mouth shrouded in darkness), and he possesses a black zipper line running down his chest and belly, with the zipper sporting an orange colored star pendant. He also emits a ylang-ylang scent from the little spray applicator in his mouth. KickinChicken's cartoon appearance is roughly the same as his toy appearance, albeit with his zipper line removed, the addition of white pupils, and the zipper pendant attached to a black necklace. According to his character description, KickinChicken is depicted as the "cool kid" of the Smiling Critters crew. He highly values this representation of himself, so he maintains his image through everything he does. This behavior appears in the cartoon's intro, where he is seen surfing, a sport generally considered to be cool. KickinChicken also has a strong sense of determination, as he will emerge unfazed from any tense situation that brings him to his knees. In the Smiling Critters Cartoon, despite this enthusiasm, KickinChicken is prone to fear, as he cowered with the other six Smiling Critters (excluding CatNap) during a windy storm at DogDay's house. When CatNap agreed to use the Red Smoke to help them sleep, KickinChicken showed signs of euphoria when inhaling it, laughing hysterically with the others until they all passed out. Hoppy Hopscotch is an anthropomorphic lime green rabbit with black eyes, a black nose, and long ears, as well as a green cotton tail. Her paws are green, similar to the rounded T-shape design in the inside of her ears. She is particularly fond of outdoor sports, specifically soccer as shown in the intro to the Smiling Critters Cartoon, in which she kicks a soccer ball while she is atop a rainbow. She is also described as sometimes being loud, bossy, and impatient especially when it comes to Player hopping to the Moon with her. Despite this, Hoppy also demonstrates eagerness to help others and slow down accordingly as proven by both her character description and her cutout dialogue. In the Smiling Critters Cartoon, like the other Smiling Critters, Hoppy showcased an unnerving and maniacal personality when CatNap came to DogDay's house during her sleepover. Her retained excitability was shown when she chanted, "Sleep! Sleep! Sleep!" to CatNap, encouraging him to use his abilities to overcome her fear-induced insomnia. When CatNap complied, Hoppy showed signs of euphoria when inhaling the Red Smoke, laughing hysterically with the others until she passed out. The Bigger Body version of Hoppy is shown to be concerning of her allies, as she brought back an injured toy to be treated when they were ambushed. Bubba Bubbaphant is an anthropomorphic cerulean elephant with black eyes, a S-shaped trunk, a long tail with a bulb-shaped end, and large ears. His feet, hands, and tail end, as well as the inside of his trunk and ears, are blue. Similar to the other Smiling Critters, Bubba is depicted with a wide toothless grin (the inner mouth shrouded in darkness), and he possesses a zipper line running down his center, with the zipper sporting a yellow light bulb pendant with a blue Edison screw base. Bubba also emits a lemongrass scent from the little spray applicator in his mouth. His cartoon appearance is roughly the same as his toy appearance, albeit with his zipper line removed, the addition of white pupils, and the zipper pendant attached to a black necklace. According to his Twitter description, Bubba Bubbaphant is the most intelligent Smiling Critter and acts as the brain of the gang. This behavior is backed up by his light bulb pendant (often used in cartoons to convey brilliant ideas), and by his interactions with CraftyCorn in the cartoon's intro, when he removed her painting from her easel to reveal a complex math equation. Bubba is observant and level-headed, keeping his friends on the right track to make smart decisions, so they can create a bright future for themselves. In the Smiling Critters Cartoon, like the other Smiling Critters, Bubba showcased a more desperate personality when CatNap came to DogDay's house during their sleepover. His retained intelligence was the catalyst for the subsequent events, as he was the first critter to ask CatNap to use his abilities to overcome their fear-induced insomnia. In line with other Smiling Critters, Bobby BearHug sports a perpetual wide toothless grin, her inner mouth shrouded in mysterious darkness, and she possesses a distinctive black zipper tracing down her center, with the zipper sporting a ruby-colored heart pendant. Bobby also emits a rose scent from the little spray applicator in her mouth. Bobby BearHug's cartoon appearance is roughly the same as her toy appearance, albeit with her zipper line removed, the addition of white pupils, and the zipper pendant now attached to a black necklace. According to her character description, Bobby BearHug possesses warm and appreciative qualities, similar to how Huggy Wuggy was designed. She cares deeply about her friends and everything around her, and will presumably act as a peacemaker, sharing the same role with CraftyCorn, if a fight breaks out amidst the crew. However, Bobby can also be seen as naive, as she may care about someone who does not have her best intentions at heart. According to her cardboard cutout, she fears being abandoned, asking The Player if they are going to leave her. In the Smiling Critters Cartoon, like the other Smiling Critters, Bobby BearHug showcased an unnerving and maniacal personality when CatNap came to DogDay's house during their sleepover. When CatNap helped them fall asleep via the Red Smoke, Bobby showed signs of euphoria when inhaling the sleeping agent, laughing gleefully with the others until she passed out. CraftyCorn is an anthropomorphic unicorn with white skin, black eyes, horse ears, and a silver spiral horn protruding from the center of her head. Her hooves, mane and tail are colored aqua, similar to the inside of her ears. Like the other Smiling Critters, CraftyCorn is depicted with a wide toothless grin with a voice box inside the black mouth and she possesses a black zipper line running down her center, with the zipper sporting a five-petaled rainbow flower pendant. She also emits a jasmine scent from the little spray applicator in her mouth. CraftyCorn's cartoon appearance is roughly the same as her toy appearance, albeit with her zipper line removed, the addition of white pupils and the zipper pendant now attached to a black necklace. According to her Twitter description, CraftyCorn is a creative unicorn with a passion for art, sharing its importance with the other crew members seeing the beauty in all things around her. In the cartoon's intro, CraftyCorn demonstrates her skills as a talented painter, painting an exact replica of Bobby BearHug, which she excitedly showed to Bubba Bubbaphant (only to have him take it off to reveal his math equations, much to her surprise). This is reflected in other aspects, as throughout the art for the cartoon, she is always depicted painting or drawing something. CraftyCorn is also often shown to be quite shy, as well as timid and jumpy in the Smiling Critters Cartoon, as she screamed and cowered under her blanket when a tree branch snapped off during a windy storm at DogDay's house, showing her as the most easily scared of the group. When CatNap helped them fall asleep via The Red Smoke, CraftyCorn showed signs of euphoria when inhaling the sleeping agent, laughing hysterically with the others until they passed out. CatNap's toy form is an anthropomorphic purple-furred cat with black eyes, triangular ears, a black nose, and a very long tail. His paws are a darker shade of purple, similar to the insides of his ears. Just like the other Smiling Critters, CatNap is depicted with a wide, toothless smile with a small gray air tube sewn inside. His torso possesses a zipper line running down that entire segment of his body, with the zipper sporting a yellow crescent moon pendant. CatNap’s cartoon/artwork appearance is roughly the same as his toy appearance, albeit with his zipper line removed, the addition of white pupils, and the zipper pendant now attached to a black necklace. He was also supposed to emit a lavender scent from the little spray applicator in his mouth, but ended up expelling the Red Smoke instead, giving children horrendous nightmares. According to information gathered from his information card, CatNap's cartoon form was stated to be silent, yet docile, gentle, bashful, and highly impressionable. While eerie and unnerving at first glance, CatNap was in reality a rather calming presence, as he always wanted to ensure his friends were getting the proper bed rest they needed. He enjoyed watching them sleep soundly.
