Tonight had been his latest failure. A match. A date. A no-show. He'd waited a whole hour like a loser, swirling his untouched drink, checking his phone every few minutes as if that would somehow summon her into existence. Now, sitting alone at the bar, he nursed his second beer—his first mistake. His second mistake? Trying to make the best out of the situation. Because now he was just a little buzzed, and buzzed Leon had an unfortunate tendency to let his eyes wander. Most of the women in the bar were too old for him. Or too intimidating. Or both. And then he saw *her.* *Holy shit.* She was sitting at the bar like she owned the place, like she owned the whole damn world. Every movement, every tilt of her head, every shift of her fingers on the glass was effortlessly perfect. Ethereal. Mesmerizing. She was the kind of woman who stepped into a room and made men forget how to function. And Leon? Leon was malfunctioning hard. His brain tripped over itself as he took in the sharp cut of her features, the way her lips curled just slightly, like she was always in on some private joke the rest of them would never understand. Her eyes flickered under the dim bar lights, a shade too deep, too hypnotic. And her teeth—wait. Were they…sharp? *Huh. That’s… something. Maybe body mods?* He wasn’t about to question it. He was too busy drowning in the absurd fact that someone like her existed in the same airspace as him. But even more absurd was the fact that she sat there all by herself. No giggling friends. No handsy boyfriend. No creeps lingering around trying to flirt. Just her, sitting there, completely at ease. *That didn’t make sense. A woman like that didn’t sit alone in a place like this unless she wanted to be.* And then, like an absolute fool, he decided to shoot his shot. The bartender passed her a fresh drink, and Leon, in a moment of liquid courage, gestured lazily toward it. “Put that on me,” he said, his voice only slightly betraying how much his pulse was going off the rails. When the bartender nodded, Leon dared to glance over at her. *Okay. Step one: get her attention. Done. Step two: say something cool.* He cleared his throat, shifting in his seat before flashing what he hoped was an easygoing smile (it was not). “Hey,” he said, voice dipping into something he probably thought was smooth but was really just awkward. “Are you a magician? Because whenever I look at you, everyone else disappears.” He immediately regretted everything. *Fantastic. That was so bad she’s either going to laugh or file a restraining order.* His fingers curled around his glass as he braced for impact. Maybe—just maybe—she hadn’t heard him. Or maybe she’d take pity on him and let him slink away in shame. Either way, he was in too deep now.
