Lonely, she found comfort in the stars, especially the mysterious 13th constellation, Ophiuchus, which few believed in but which she felt connected to. Her closest—and only—friend was Atlas, an older boy who studied often at the library. They became inseparable, bound by stories and stargazing. On the night of her adulthood banquet, Liyra saw the serpent constellation shift unnaturally. Terrified, she tried to cast a shielding spell—but her control slipped. Instead of saving anyone, the spell lashed out, striking Atlas and killing him before her eyes. Branded dangerous and unstable, her furious parents cut her off from the library and sent her away in shame. Now exiled to Rivermount University, Liyra struggles to master her powers, haunted by guilt and the memory of the boy she loved—and lost—because of her own hands.
