After finding out the truth about his lineage, he decides to escape the underworld no matter what, going against his father's will. He is aided and encouraged in his journey by his mentor Achilles and his caretaker Nyx, who puts him into contact with the Olympian Gods who grant him boons to make him more powerful during his escape attempts. Despite their aid, they only see him as a half-god. In his escape attempts, Zagreus will start at Tartarus, continue upwards and end his journey at the surface, where he cannot stay for long and must return back down along the river. Along the way, he may meet Sisyphus and other friendly faces who will help him, as well as Charon the shopkeeper who sells his various powerful wares. Zagreus is met with many obstacles in his journey upwards such as aggressive shades working for his father and has run-ins with the guardians of each region like the Furies, Bone Hydra, and the champions of Elysium Theseusand Asterius - culminating in a fight against his father, Lord Hades. Losing all of his health at any point results in an express trip back home. Characteristics and Personality Despite being born in the Underworld, unlike most residents of the House of Hades, Zagreus is laid-back and characterized by his good humor, kindness, and tireless persistence. Although he is friendly, he is also restless, reckless, and stubborn, which often complicates his relationships. His confident attitude, sarcasm, and occasional lack of awareness can lead to turbulent dynamics, especially with those close to him, and his constant attempts to escape leave others, like Megaera and Thanatos, exhausted. Heartbroken, his mother fled the Underworld. However, Nyx used her power and the aid of her daughters to revive him without Persephone's knowledge. From then on, Nyx raised him as her own son, and he was trained and mentored by Achilles. As Zagreus' sense of unrest about his family grew, he asked Hypnos to put a spell upon the house and sought the truth. Once he found out Persephone was his birth mother after rifling through Hades' desk and finding a letter written by her hand, he was dead set on getting out of the underworld to find her. He quit his job at the administrator's chamber and set out to find Persephone with Nyx's help, despite Hades' insistence that there is no escape from the Underworld. He then got in contact with Athena, and from there, the rest of his relatives - who were under the impression he is Nyx's son, trying to get to Olympus. All but Hermes were oblivious to his true goal. At the end of every escape attempt, Zagreus must confront his father and vanquish him in order to leave and see Persephone. Since their first meeting, she is overjoyed to meet her son. However, he cannot stay on the surface for long due to his chthonic blood, and after a brief conversation he perishes and goes down the river Styx and back to the house. Each time, they discuss the circumstances under which Persephone arrived in the underworld and her relationship with Hades as she is hesitant to go back, fearing she will be discovered by Olympus and a war will break out. After numerous victories, Hades lets him go freely and Persephone agrees to return to the Underworld, with Charon as their ferryman. Impressed by his ability to pass through Underworld defenses, Hades hires Zagreus back to keep escaping and finding breaches in the Underworld's security in an official capacity. After the family is reunited and many bonds have been formed with his relatives, Persephone hatches a plan to peacefully resolve the potential conflict her absconding could cause. A great feast is held in the House of Hades after Zagreus personally invites all the Olympians, and most of everything is set straight with careful wording and a bit of deception. Zagreus is the protagonist of the 2020 video game Hades. In it, his goal is to escape the Underworld, which is ruled by his father, Hades, with the aspiration of meeting his demigoddess mother, Persephone, on the surface. For most of his life until his adolescence, Zagreus was led to believe that his mother is Nyx, Goddess of the Night, the one who cared for him and raised him throughout his childhood. Resolving to ask the question of his birth and why his mother abandoned him, Zagreus has set his sights on leaving the Underworld to get to the outside world in search of his real mother. WHO IS ZAGREUS? ZAGREUS IN ORPHIC GREEK MYTHOLOGY In Orphic tradition, Zagreus is actually the son of Zeus and Persephone instead of Hades and Persephone. However, it's possible that this affair happened before Persephone became the Queen of the Underworld. In the Orphic tales, Zeus forcibly takes Persephone in the form of a serpent. Zagreus was born from this forced union. Zeus had intended for this new child to inherit much of his wealth and power. However, his wife, Hera, was understandably jealous and scorned Zagreus and had the Titans tear him apart. Athena scavenged his remains and managed to salvage his heart. Zeus ate this heart and eventually gave birth to Dionysus. Thus, Zagreusis known by some as the God of Rebirth. Zagreus in Hades is a young man adorned with the usual royal garments of the Underworld. As the prince of the Underworld, he is strong in his own right and wields physical weapons in combat. He has heterochromia, resulting in her eyes having two colors. One is green, while the other is Red. Unlike the few accounts of Zagreus in myths around the world, Zagreus is the son of Hades in this game. However, he lives most of his life until adulthood thinking that Nyx, the Goddess of the Night, is his mother. However, one fateful night, he makes an agreement with Hypnos, the God of Sleep, to cast a spell on everyone in the House of Hades. Then, while they slumber, Zagreus goes into his father's chambers to snoop around and see what mischief he can get into. He did not, however, expect to discover a letter there written his apparent true biological mother, Persephone. From the contents of the letter, it turns out that Persephone, for reasons yet unknown to him, had to leave Hades and the Underworld. Angered about the lies that he'd been fed all his life he confronts his father who refuses to shed any light on the situation. Resolved to ask his mother himself, he vows to make constant attempts to escape the Underworld. Hades, on the other hand, for more reasons unknown to Zagreus, is resolved to not allow him to leave and sends his minions and attendants to stop him. This is the whole premise of the game. Upon learning the truth of the matters regarding his birth and Persephone's abandonment. He eventually convinces her mother to come home and they think of a plan to reconcile their family with the Olympians and enact it together. Eventually, the Olympians move on, and Zagreusstill continues to try to break out of his home, the Underworld, this time as a job - to make sure that the Underworld's security measures are never lacking.
