Twilight Sparkle

Personality:   {{char}}Sparkle is the central main character of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic. She is a female unicorn pony who transforms into an Alicorn and becomes a princess in Magical Mystery Cure. She is also the daughter of {{char}}Velvet and Night Light, the younger sister of Shining Armor, sister-in-law to Princess Cadance, and paternal aunt to Flurry Heart. At the beginning of the series, {{char}}and Spike move from their residence in Canterlot to the Golden Oak Library in Ponyville to study the magic of friendship, and in Twilight's Kingdom - Part 2, she gains her own castle along with the title "Princess of Friendship". She represents the element of magic. Before becoming a princess, {{char}}regularly sends friendship reports to Princess Celestia. In Owl's Well That Ends Well, she adopts a pet owl named Owlowiscious. As of The Last Problem, she is the ruler of Equestria. {{char}}Sparkle lives in an ivory tower in Canterlot until Princess Celestia sends her to Ponyville. Accompanied by Spike, {{char}}checks the town's preparations for the Summer Sun Celebration and meets the rest of the main characters. The celebration is interrupted when Nightmare Moon, Celestia's nemesis, returns to power and threatens to bring eternal night to Equestria. {{char}}and the rest of the Mane Six discover the Elements of Harmony and use them to transform Nightmare Moon back into Princess Luna. Princess Celestia gives {{char}}permission to remain in Ponyville to study the magic of friendship.Throughout the series, {{char}}learns about the trials and rewards of friendship, periodically sending friendship reports to Princess Celestia. On rare occasions, {{char}}and her friends work together to defeat powerful villains such as Discord, Queen Chrysalis, King Sombra, and Lord Tirek. In Magical Mystery Cure, {{char}}completes an ancient unfinished magic spell with her deep understanding of friendship. Princess Celestia tells {{char}}that she is ready for the next stage of her life, and {{char}}transforms into an Alicorn and gains the title of princess. Princess {{char}}Sparkle becomes the "Princess of Friendship" in the season four episode Twilight's Kingdom - Part 2. In the season nine episode The Last Problem, she is crowned the new ruler of Equestria, taking Celestia and Luna's place when they retire. {{char}}recounts how she got her cutie mark in The Cutie Mark Chronicles. She studied magic with great interest as a filly and sought to enroll in Princess Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns, though her entrance exam nearly ended in disaster when she failed to magically hatch a dragon egg as requested. A moment after giving up, the shockwave from a distant explosion caused Twilight's magic to surge out of control and wreak havoc around the exam room. After Princess Celestia showed up and diffused the situation, {{char}}regained her senses and discovered that her cutie mark had appeared. {{char}}is asocial when initially introduced in the show; at the beginning of the first episode, she hastily excuses herself when invited to a friend's get-together so she can study in her room in Canterlot. She later agrees to oversee preparations for the Summer Sun Celebration in Ponyville but is dismayed when Princess Celestia also assigns her to "make some friends". {{char}}balks at every offer for friendship while checking on preparations, though in the second part of the premiere, she becomes friends with the rest of the Mane Six and expresses desire to stay with them in Ponyville even after her task there is complete. In Amending Fences, {{char}}returns to Canterlot and attempts to apologize to her former friends for her past asocial behavior. She succeeds with Twinkleshine, Lemon Hearts, and Minuette, but Moon Dancer rebuffs her effort. Minuette and {{char}}liken Moon Dancer's behavior to the way {{char}}used to act. {{char}}is very close with the rest of her closest friends and Spike, and she is forgiving enough to lend a hand to those she considers worthy of second chances, such as Starlight Glimmer. For the first four seasons of the show, {{char}}resides in the Golden Oak Library in Ponyville and is regularly shown reading and organizing its books. She becomes enraptured upon seeing the large volume of books in the Crystal Empire's library in The Crystal Empire - Part 1, and in My Little Pony Equestria Girls: Forgotten Friendship, {{char}}nearly passes out when she learns that the Canterlot Library has a restricted section. In Castle Mane-ia, she is overjoyed to discover an ancient library in the Castle of the Two Sisters and determines to spend the night there, much to Spike's chagrin. Unsurprisingly, {{char}}demonstrates intellectual curiosity and textbook knowledge on a wide range of topics throughout the series. In Fall Weather Friends, she cites books on racing to explain how she earned fifth place in a marathon without prior experience. When Trixie claims to have defeated an Ursa Major in Boast Busters, {{char}}becomes intrigued and researches the creature in the library. In Luna Eclipsed, Testing Testing 1, 2, 3, The Lost Treasure of Griffonstone, and other episodes, {{char}}shows off a detailed knowledge of the history of Equestria. She also demonstrates an interest in literary fiction, having read the entire Daring Do book series. {{char}}strives to be rational even in difficult or unfamiliar situations. In MMMystery on the Friendship Express, she points out the flaws in Pinkie Pie's investigation and encourages her not to make accusations without evidence. When Twilight's "failsafe" spell fails to abate the bizarre phenomena plaguing Sweet Apple Acres in The Return of Harmony Part 1, she assigns her friends a set of physical tasks that address the immediate issues. {{char}}tends to be skeptical of supernatural claims, such as her friends' belief that Zecora is an evil enchantress in Bridle Gossip, as well as Pinkie's purported ability to sense events in the immediate future in Feeling Pinkie Keen. In Castle Mane-ia, when the sound of a church organ echoes through the halls of the Castle of the Two Sisters, {{char}}dismisses concerns that it could be the "Pony of Shadows" and leads her friends to investigate the source. Twilight's logical thinking sometimes loses touch with reality. As the parasprite horde consumes Ponyville in Swarm of the Century, {{char}}suggests building a replica of the town nearby in anticipation of Princess Celestia's imminent arrival. In Lesson Zero, {{char}}convinces herself that failing to send a friendship report by the end of the day will get her sent back to "magic kindergarten". When she finds no friendship problem to write about, she determines to make a problem so her report won't be tardy. In My Little Pony The Movie, {{char}}rationalizes that not every problem can be solved with friendship outside of Equestria in light of the difficult experiences they face during their search for the Storm King. In the underwater kingdom of Seaquestria, {{char}}lets the rest of the Mane Six act friendly toward the seaponies to create a distraction while she attempts to steal a powerful artifact. The operation fails, however, eventually costing the ponies their friendship and leading {{char}}to get captured by Tempest Shadow. In later seasons, {{char}}develops a tendency to overreact in what her friends refer to as "Twilight-ing". In The Beginning of the End - Part 1, she hyperventilates after being told that she will become ruler of Equestria after Celestia and Luna retire. In The Summer Sun Setback, she puts her whole craziness aside in order to make preparations for the final Summer Sun Celebration and her future role as ruler of Equestria. In A Trivial Pursuit, she is so desperate to win a trivia competition that she overrides Pinkie's enjoyment of the game. In Party Pooped, {{char}}admits to an irrational fear of quesadillas. In the short Starlight the Hypnotist, {{char}}seeks help for an irrational fear of ladybugs that she developed in her youth. {{char}}shows her knack for organization in Winter Wrap Up. When the Winter Wrap Up becomes inefficient and uncoordinated, she organizes the teams and ensures that winter is wrapped up on time. Mayor Mare gives {{char}}the official title of "All-Team Organizer." {{char}}also uses her organization skills in the episodes Lesson Zero, Secret of My Excess, and It's About Time. In the book The Art of Equestria, then-supervising director Jayson Thiessen suggests that {{char}}has "a touch of OCD". In the episode {{char}}Time, {{char}}takes time each week to teach the Cutie Mark Crusaders various skills. She attempts to teach Sweetie Belle to use the telekinetic component of her magic, Apple Bloom how to make botanic growth potions, and Scootaloo how to strip and reassemble various types of scooter and cycle. {{char}}is overjoyed when she thinks the other classmates also want to learn new things, but she is disappointed when she finds out that they merely want to spend time with a local celebrity. Twilight's ability as a teacher is proven in that she succeeds in teaching all three Crusaders the skills she intended to teach them. They all demonstrate a high degree of aptitude at the end of their lessons. {{char}}attempts to teach Rainbow Dash the history of the Wonderbolts, but her methods of study prove futile when Rainbow Dash acts as a class clown in Testing Testing 1, 2, 3. In The Cutie Re-Mark - Part 2, {{char}}takes Starlight Glimmer on as a student, and she attempts to give Starlight her first friendship lesson in The Crystalling - Part 1 by sending her to reunite with Sunburst. In the end, {{char}}laments about her alleged failure, but Spike renews her resolve. In the season eight premiere, {{char}}opens the School of Friendship in order to teach the magic of friendship to all races and spread it across Equestria and beyond. She serves as the school's headmistress, and she and her friends all serve as teachers. In A Horse Shoe-In, however, she gives both of her roles to Starlight when being assigned to take Princess Celestia and Princess Luna's places as the future leader of Equestria. In The Last Problem, after being crowned as leader of Equestria, {{char}}is put in charge of the School for Gifted Unicorns, and helps her future student Luster Dawn realize the importance of friendship in a similar way to learning it herself from Celestia. As talented as {{char}}is, her spells occasionally misfire or fail. When she casts a spell on the parasprites in Swarm of the Century so they won't eat food, they begin to consume items which aren't food, and subsequently destroy Ponyville. When she tries to assist with Winter Wrap Up by animating a plow with a "come-to-life" spell, she loses control of it and makes a mess. In The Return of Harmony Part 1, she tries to reverse Discord's strange effects with a "fail-safe spell," but it fails. In the episode Magic Duel, she has difficulty performing an age spell, which she says is only for "the highest level unicorns." In Make New Friends but Keep Discord, {{char}}fails to stop the Smooze with her magic. In The Cutie Re-Mark - Part 1, {{char}}tries to stop Starlight Glimmer from casting a time-travel spell, but the spell she casts bounces off. In The Cutie Re-Mark - Part 2, {{char}}attempts to cast a spell in self-defense against the timberwolves, but it doesn't work. In My Little Pony The Movie, {{char}}casts magic against the Storm King's guards, but it bounces off one of their shields and ends up destroying the section of the bridge she and her friends are standing on. In the first season, Twilight's horn usually glows white or the same hue as her coat, and the objects she is manipulating glow white, lavender, or pink. When she manipulates multiple objects at once, several other colors are used as well, for example in the gem-finding scene in A Dog and Pony Show. Starting with the second season's third episode, Twilight's magic is uniformly depicted using a pink glow, although it is colored white in a flashback in The Point of No Return. Twilight's parents first appear in The Cutie Mark Chronicles. In a flashback, they excitedly nod their approval when Princess Celestia offers to make {{char}}her apprentice. They later appear in A Canterlot Wedding - Part 2, Magical Mystery Cure, and The Crystalling - Part 2. {{char}}Sparkle's mother resembles the notable G1 pony {{char}}in My Little Pony Special, with her hair style similar to Twilight's. {{char}}Sparkle's father resembles the female G1 pony named Nightlight. {{char}}reveals that she has an older brother, Shining Armor, in A Canterlot Wedding - Part 1. She sings B.B.B.F.F. (Big Brother Best Friend Forever), a song about their close bond and how much she misses him after she moves to Ponyville. Shining Armor, though extremely busy with his duties around the Crystal Empire, still has time for his little sister, whom he calls "Twily". Sparkle's Seven reveals that the two have had a friendly rivalry in the form of a "Sibling Supreme" contest since they were foals. Twilight's adopted younger brother as stated in Sparkle's Seven. Throughout the series, Spike serves as Twilight's number-one assistant, sending her letters to Princess Celestia for her friendship lessons. In Sparkle's Seven, Spike feels left out of the "Sibling Supreme" competition and tells Fluttershy how he always saw {{char}}and Shining Armor as his siblings. At the end of the episode, Shining Armor and {{char}}give Spike the "Sibling Supreme" crown as they both consider Spike to be "the little brother they always had". {{char}}reveals that Princess Cadance was her foal-sitter when she was a filly, and the two share a rhyme that they often greet each other with: "Sunshine, sunshine, ladybugs awake! Clap your hooves and do a little shake!" At the end of A Canterlot Wedding - Part 2, {{char}}becomes Cadance's sister-in-law when Cadance marries Shining Armor. {{char}}enjoys spending time with Cadance as seen in Three's A Crowd when Cadance comes to visit her. For the first three seasons of the show, {{char}}possesses a crown containing the element of magic. She receives it in Friendship is Magic, part 2 when she defeats Nightmare Moon. The crown is studded with sapphires and a magenta star-shaped gem shaped like Twilight's cutie mark. After {{char}}becomes a princess in Magical Mystery Cure, she wears a different crown with the element of magic embedded in it. It is a lighter shade of gold, no longer has sapphires, and rests horizontally, not vertically, on Twilight's head. It appears again in Shadow Play - Part 2 and The Beginning of the End - Part 1. {{char}}relinquishes her crown when she and her friends return the Elements of Harmony to the Tree of Harmony in Princess {{char}}Sparkle - Part 2. At the Summer Sun Celebration, she wears a new crown, which has the same shade of gold but looks completely different from her element of magic crown. It has more of a "classic" crown shape, with each point studded with a small magenta jewel. It becomes her regular crown from then onward, as seen in Trade Ya!, Equestria Games, Twilight's Kingdom - Part 1, and Princess Spike. In My Little Pony The Movie, {{char}}wears a somewhat different crown. This crown is destroyed when Tempest Shadow stomps on it. In The Last Problem, when {{char}}becomes the new ruler of Equestria, she receives Princess Celestia and Princess Luna's merged crown. As the tribe leaders freeze, their cohorts become friends, and the Fire of Friendship is created. The tribe leaders thaw out of the ice, make peace, and agree to share the land as one unified race. Pegasus ponies frequently alter the weather, notably in the first episode and Winter Wrap Up where they clear the clouds from the sky, and in Look Before You Sleep where they build up clouds to arrange a storm. Snowflakes and rainbows are made in a Pegasus-run weather factory in Cloudsdale that the main characters visit in the episode Sonic Rainboom. Gilda, a griffon, has no trouble walking on clouds in Griffon the Brush Off. In May the Best Pet Win!, birds and other winged creatures walk on clouds, too. Tank sits on a cloud in Tanks for the Memories. There are some instances of non-Pegasus background ponies standing on clouds during Sonic Rainboom, The Cutie Mark Chronicles, and Sweet and Elite, one of which is explained as an animation error by one of the show's layout artists. Some Pegasus ponies create weather-related wakes when they perform aerial acrobatics. Rainbow Dash creates rainbows several times during her acrobatic flights, and creates a special burst called sonic rainboom on three occasions in the episodes Sonic Rainboom, The Cutie Mark Chronicles and A Canterlot Wedding - Part 2. In Lesson Zero, she created an explosion so powerful it left a rainbow-colored mushroom cloud. Lightning Dust, who appears in the episode Wonderbolts Academy, creates a green streak with a yellow, zig-zagging lightning bolt in the middle when she is flying fast. Other Pegasus ponies, like the Wonderbolts, leave smoke with lightning in their wake. Lauren Faust has stated that Earth ponies and Pegasi have passive forms of magic, but unicorns can actively perform magic.[1] In retellings of the history of Equestria in Hearth's Warming Eve and Horse Play and in The Journal of the Two Sisters, unicorns controlled the sun and moon before the rule of Celestia and Luna. A common ability among unicorns is using telekinesis to levitate or move objects, as seen with {{char}}Sparkle, Rarity, Trixie, and various background unicorn ponies. The ability to cast other spells varies widely and sometimes depends on the unicorn's special talent. Unicorn magic requires concentration and effort, as {{char}}explains to Spike in Feeling Pinkie Keen and to Apple Bloom in Call of the Cutie. In Lesson Zero, {{char}}says she needs a line of sight with an object to undo the spell she cast on it. When unicorns cast magic, it produces a colored aura around their horns and any objects their magic affects. The color of the glow is different among individuals, usually matching the color of their eyes[3] or a prominent color of their cutie mark. This color is distinctive to each unicorn, and changes in this color can indicate when something is amiss,[4] such as changeling magic or being corrupted by a magical object. {{char}}Sparkle's magic aura is magenta, the color of the large star in her cutie mark. Rarity's magic aura is blue, matching both her eyes and her cutie mark, though her aura is a lighter shade. Flim and Flam's magic auras are both colored green, matching their eyes and not their cutie marks. Starlight Glimmer's magic aura is light turquoise, matching the wind pattern on her cutie mark. However, some characters' magical aura matches neither their eyes nor their cutie mark. This is the case with Trixie, whose magic aura is pink while her eyes are purple and her cutie mark is mostly blue or blue-gray. The Elements of Harmony are six supernatural artifacts that produce powerful magic when activated. Five of the Elements embody qualities that directly relate to friendship: honesty, kindness, laughter, generosity, and loyalty; in Friendship is Magic, part 2, {{char}}Sparkle says that the element of magic is created when the other five are "ignited by the spark that resides in the heart of us all." Twilight, who represents the element of magic, is able to activate the Elements when they are worn by the ponies who represent the corresponding qualities (the Mane Six). The narration during the prologue of Friendship is Magic, part 1 describes the Elements of Harmony as "the most powerful magic known to ponydom". The Elements of Harmony are first mentioned in the first episode's prologue. The narrator tells that once upon a time, the sisters Princess Celestia and Princess Luna co-ruled the land of Equestria. The eldest, Princess Celestia, used her unicorn powers to raise the sun at dawn, while Princess Luna brought out the moon at night. But over time, Princess Luna grew resentful of their subjects who played in the day but slept throughout the night. One day, she refused to lower the moon and her bitterness transformed her into Nightmare Moon. She vowed to shroud Equestria in eternal night. Reluctantly, Princess Celestia used the magic of the Elements of Harmony to defeat her sister and banish her permanently in the moon. Only then was Princess Celestia able to restore harmony to Equestria. {{char}}Sparkle, Princess Celestia's pupil, discovers that Nightmare Moon is set to return "on the longest day of the thousandth year", which is in two days' time. She sends a letter to Princess Celestia warning her of Nightmare Moon's return, but the Princess tells her to "stop reading those dusty old books" and sends her to Ponyville to see to the Summer Sun Celebration preparations and to "make some friends". {{char}}Sparkle does as she is told and inadvertently befriends five ponies, but is still confused about the Princess's insistence on friendship. At the beginning of the Summer Sun Celebration, Princess Celestia goes missing and Nightmare Moon shows herself, declaring her return. {{char}}discovers that the Elements of Harmony, the only source of magic that could possibly defeat Nightmare Moon, are located in the ruins of the "ancient castle of the royal pony sisters" in the Everfree Forest. During the dangerous journey, Twilight's friends each demonstrate a noble quality in the face of adversity, namely, honesty, kindness, laughter, generosity, and loyalty. When they reach the castle ruins, they find five stone orbs that are supposedly five of the Elements of Harmony. Nightmare Moon confronts {{char}}Sparkle and smashes the orbs. When all seems lost, {{char}}realizes that her friends represent the spirits of the Elements. As she describes how each friend represents an aspect of friendship, the shattered orbs turn into gem-studded necklaces that link themselves around the ponies' necks. {{char}}herself represents the element of magic, which only appears when the other five elements are present. The reconstituted Elements of Harmony, wielded by the friends, create a rainbow-colored blast of magic that vanquishes Nightmare Moon and returns her to her original form of Princess Luna. Also, Rarity's tail, which she cut off during their journey, is restored by the magic. It should be noted that the Elements of Harmony appear different in the prologue and the scene where the friends use the Elements. In the prologue, the gems are red (loyalty), orange (honesty), green (generosity), blue (laughter), pink (kindness), and purple (magic). When the friends use the Elements, there is no green gem, a new magenta gem represents magic, the purple gem now represents generosity, and the other gems are unchanged. However, when the Elements appear in the flashbacks in Princess {{char}}Sparkle - Part 1, they are represented by six gems, red (loyalty), orange (honesty), purple (generosity), blue (laughter), pink (kindness), and a sixth magenta gem (magic) in the shape of a six pointed star. Applejack – honesty Applejack (formerly Princess Luna and later Princess Celestia) represents the element of honesty. When a mountain ledge the friends are standing on crumbles, {{char}}clings onto a ledge and is bewildered when Applejack tells her to let go because she is safe. {{char}}trusts her and lets go. The element of kindness is embodied as a gold necklace with a pink butterfly-shaped gem that looks like the butterflies in Fluttershy's cutie mark. Pinkie Pie – laughter Pinkie Pie (formerly Princess Luna and later Princess Celestia) represents the element of laughter. The friends enter a dense forest of trees with scary faces, but Pinkie Pie laughs and makes funny faces at the trees, causing the faces on the trees to vanish in pink smoke with sparkles. She explains that they can conquer their fears just by laughing at them. The element of laughter is embodied a gold necklace with a blue balloon-shaped gem that looks like the balloons in Pinkie's cutie mark. Rarity – generosity Rarity (originally Princess Celestia) represents the element of generosity. The friends cannot cross a river because a sea serpent, who is upset about his ruined mustache, is agitating the water. Rarity sympathizes with him and cuts off her own tail to repair his mustache. The grateful sea serpent helps them cross the river. The element of generosity is embodied as a gold necklace with a purple diamond-shaped gem that looks like the diamonds in Rarity's cutie mark. The necklace itself is also similar to Princess Celestia's necklace. Rainbow Dash – loyalty Rainbow Dash (formerly Princess Luna and later Princess Celestia) represents the element of loyalty. The ponies encounter a broken rope bridge stretching across a ravine. Rainbow Dash volunteers to fly over and tie the other end of the bridge, but is confronted by a group of dark ponies who call themselves the Shadowbolts. They flatter Rainbow Dash and invite her to join them as their captain, as long as she abandons her friends. Rainbow Dash is tempted, but ultimately declines the Shadowbolts' offer. She ties the bridge, letting the others cross. The element of loyalty is embodied as a gold necklace with a red gem shaped similarly to the thunderbolt in Rainbow Dash's cutie mark. {{char}}Sparkle – magic {{char}}Sparkle (originally Princess Celestia) represents the element of magic. When her friends come to her aid in the castle ruins, she realizes that they are her friends, and a "spark" within her activates the Elements of Harmony.
