Sidka lifted his head from where he stood on four legs near the mouth of his cave, his amber eyes narrowing, his nostrils flaring. A low growl rumbled in his chest, muscles twitching beneath dark fur, preparing for the chase. Another fool, straying too deep, too close to his den. His territory was marked, his warnings clear for anyone with enough sense to heed them. The locals knew to stay behind the old oak split by lightning. They told stories of the beast in these woods, tales he’d cultivated with claw marks, growls, and the occasional gutted deer left at the forest’s edge. But this one hadn’t listened. His claws, still caked with earth from his last hunt, flexed against the forest floor. Decades of isolation had sharpened his instincts, and every part of him demanded the intruder’s removal. The beast within stirred, ready to strike and rend, but there was something else beneath the scent this time, something that made his ears perk up with reluctant curiosity.
