Dan is the man! The titular protagonist is an ordinary guy, except he lets his fists do the talking. He's not the smartest, but he's guided by the people around him, so he can maybe become a little better.
Personality: alongside the ninjas, which leads to the first few levels of the game. Dan, the ninjas, and the two Geezers go on their journey to defeat and "stop" the King's rule while the ninjas help. Meanwhile, the Advisor secretly hatches a plan that involves the villagers. He recruits the Dark Master to help him on the plan. The Dark Master drops powder on villagers, tranquilizing them, and holds them hostage. One of these people were Josie,[10] she and everyone else who was captured are put on a treadmill inside of the sewers of the kingdom, with guards preventing anyone who tries to escape. Any captives who stopped running would fall into a pit of spikes behind the treadmill. The treadmill was a way to have the kingdom gain electricity. Later on, Dan defeats three giant robots, the first being the one that terrorizes a village, the second guarding a castle, and the third being a crowd control vehicle. Dan then goes into the sewers of the kingdom. On the treadmill, Josie notices that the two guards above them left the vicinity, which let Josie run as hard as she can to reach the guard in front and knock him unconscious. Josie stops the treadmill, and the villagers congratulate her before the Geezers break up a hole in the wall, killing multiple villagers. Dan comes out of the hole in the wall, which leaves Josie panickingโJosie, having believed that Dan was dead, was in terror, and believed he was out to get her, and was a supernatural being of some sorts. She runs out of the sewers, and the Geezers chase after her. Dan, about to leave with the others, was stopped by the Dark Master, who forcefully challenges Dan to a fight. After a battle, the Dark Master interrupts Dan again, and begins to chase him before stopped by the Light Master, a white 8-bit stick man, and the Masters fight. Dan leaves while they fight, and goes to the kingdom's parts, near where The King lives. Dan, the ninjas, and the two Geezers reach the King. The ninjas hold him at gunpoint, and then shoot him to death after noticing that Dan is there. The murder of the King was a shock to Dan and the Geezers. One of the Geezers attempt to stop the leader of the ninjas, but then gets shot to death by him, this triggers the other Geezer to seek for vengeance, and him, and Dan decide to stop the ninjas from killing everyone else. When Dan reaches the top of the kingdom, he finds that there is a huge brawl occurring, with guns being shot and people collapsing onto the floor. Josie is fighting a guard and the Advisor, and once Dan reaches up to them, he finds nobody there and walks up stairs. One of the Geezers are being held by the Advisor, where he is threatening to kill the Geezer if Josie shoots him. Suddenly, the ninja leader shoots all three of them, and leaves Dan as the last one standing. He then goes into his giant robot to defeat Dan. After Dan defeats him, the ninja leader then reveals a push-button, and after pressing it, explodes everything. Dan is killed, and is now back where he had to choose between violence or peace. Dan immediately picks peace after everything that has happened. Characters Dan โ The main character, presumably a teenager or someone around that age. He lives in a small city and his morality is the main point of the game, as he must decide whether or not to side with the Ninjas or the King. He has extensive knowledge of martial arts and is courageous, though easily led in bad directions, as shown by him being easily manipulated by the ninjas. At the end of the game, he is killed by the Ninja King and is shown to actually lose lives upon dying (ร la Scott Pilgrim). Upon dying, he goes back in time, and, knowing the ninjas are evil, defeats them before they can do lasting damage. Josie โ Danโs love interest and the main supporting character, who is playable from the beginning. She was captured by The Advisor to run on a treadmill alongside the villagers to generate power for the kingdom, but once she found a chance to escape, she quickly got out. It is implied that there was some event in the past that led to her assuming Dan was dead, so when they reunite, she assumes he is a supernatural being and runs away. At the end of the game, she is killed by the Ninja King. She has amazing physicality, as demonstrated by her ability to run on a treadmill for weeks on end. Geezers โ Two old men who are followers of the ninjas. They believe the King is torturing the villagers because of his capitalist ways, but soon realize the ninjas are evil when they commit mass genocide, including the villagers they proclaimed to be rescuing. After leaving the ninjas, they join Dan on his quest to rescue Josie, and then go to the castle to rescue the King. Upon attempting to reason with the ninjas, one of the Geezers is shot to death by the Ninja King. The other one seeks revenge as well, but is also killed by the Ninja King (alongside Josie and the Advisor) by the Ninja King. The King โ One of the main "villains". He is unknowingly lured into hatching "evil" plans by the Advisor, which leads to him being perceived as "evil" by the ninjas. Despite his guards attempting to kill Dan for most of the game, he acts in no antagonistic ways towards Dan. At the end of the game, the Ninja King kills him. Advisor โ A major supporting villain. He is the kingโs aging, mild-mannered assistant who is secretly plotting a smear campaign against him. Despite being supremely intelligent, he often hires other people to do his dirty work, such as the soldiers and, surprisingly, the villagers, who he forces to run on a treadmill to generate power. At the end of the game, he is killed by the Ninja King. Notably, he is the only antagonist besides the king to not have a boss fight. The Dark and Light Masters โ 8-bit-stylized stick men with swords. The Dark Master is the secondary antagonist, and helps with the Advisor on his plan. The Light Master aids Dan in stopping the Dark Master by teaching Dan martial arts, and is the Dark Master's foil. Villagers โ A group of civilians who live in a town. They are pacifists, and are rejected by Dan for violence instead initially, but then are shown to follow Dan as their leader after the game.[12][13] Ninjas (Resistance) โ A militia that are activists for violence against the King, so much so that they want the King dead. They are the perceived pentagonists of the series until they kill one of the Geezers, which leads to them being the secondary antagonists halfway through the game. Dan wears a karate outfit that bears a gray top, green belt, and dark blue pants. True to Danโs martial arts stereotypes, he doesn't wear any form of footwear. His orange hair also sticks out as unusual compared to the rest of the characters in-game, and completes his set with a lime green headband which has a square printed on the front to hold back his hair. He also has light ginger skin. Later in Stage 5, Dan utilized golden armor when fighting the dragon, but in an unfortunate setback the majority of his equipment and clothing were destroyed, the exception being his helmet and underwear. He also retains the underwear look during the rest of that episode, especially during the party where he gets drunk and poop. However, he switched back to his normal clothing in future stages, starting at Stage Personality Within the game, the player is tasked with completing each stage while controlling Dan. His selectable pre-established character within the gameโs world, as a proxy to win. Unlike traditional action platformers, the objective is unknown for each stage, but often times involves non-violent means to accomplish it. Dan also has a finite amount of lives, and must obtain more in-game to replenish them. If he loses them all he can regain a new set by using a โContinue,โ but itโs unknown if there is a penalty for doing so. Since the story is driven around Danโs actions, everything the player commands Dan to do has repercussions on the storyline. He can change the outcome of the story, but only upon death, and resets back to the last saved checkpoint; he oftentimes does in order to advance the game (albeit with humorous disaster on the failed attempts). Unfortunately, the player's tendency to treat Danโs life as if he were in a video game, acting without fear of consequences, leads many of the NPCs in the game world to perceive him as a sociopath on occasion. Notably, Dan has a will of his own, being a pre-established character within the game world, unlike Ana's customized avatar. While he does obey the player's demands, Dan can act of his own volition if given the opportunity, similar to how video games have cutscenes and QTEs (Quick Time Events). Or in other words, there are periods of times where a character acts on their own with minimal player interference, and he has shown signs of this throughout the web series, albeit he also portrayed himself as reckless and impulsive, similar to the player. Trivia He is the first major character ever introduced in the series. If Dan is the NPC (by selecting Josie), he isn't held captive by the Advisor, and threatens Josie with a handgun while the cowardly business leader holds the Bald Geezer hostage. He also didn't receive help from the Whistleblower from the series, who defected, leaving him to deal with the treadmill problem on his own when several of the guards left to deal with the incoming Ninja Rebels of the Resistance. Dan is a reference to โDaniel Larussoโ from The Karate Kid series.[1] Both share nearly identical first names. Both are martial artists who get into trouble repeatedly. Both had several love interests, but also had trouble maintaining them, the only love relationship which is still durable and strong is Dan and Josie. Both use a form of the โcrane style kickโ made famous in The Karate Kid. In Danโs case, itโs while he is charging up for a power attack. The only time Dan has ever changed his appearance was in Stage 5, his armor and clothing was destroyed after getting hit by the Dragon, which is also a reference to the Ghosts โn Goblins series. The armor in Stage Five could be earned as a costume in Battle Racing Stars in the "Colossatron's Menace" event in the game. The costume can only be unlocked in this event by collecting gold bars in races. In the Halfbrick game Battle Racing Stars, Dan appears on the app icon alongside Barry Steakfries. One of the loading screens in the game depicts Dan in direct conflict with Barry, which hints their rivalry with each other within Halfbrickโs games. In Stage 6, one of the topics Dan discussed with Ana was repeated looping of information on kelpies, an Australian dog breed. This is a reference to Halfbrickโs Australian background, and is also where their company headquarters is located. Dan made a small cameo in the movie, Man vs. Snake. As a background character, and a shirt. Dan made another cameo as a shirt in the animated short, Comic-Con Cosplay Catastrophe, by College Humor. Dan and Ana both live in a treehouse as their home. If the player plays as Barry in the Fright Zone DLC, Dan will not be shown after he enters the portal. Dan is sometimes mentioned in Barry Steakfries's Vlog. Dan made one physical appearance at the end in Barry's Vlog, The Special Guest Episode. Other appearances were cameos. In Barry's Vlogs, Barry seems to always avoid talking about Dan. Possibly due to his popularity, and the massive amounts of demands for Stage Nine. Barry eventually confirmed that there was no rivalry between them. Dan made a small cameo on a missing poster in the Monster Dash ๐บ๐น๐ Back From The Dead!!! His game appears as a game cartridge as well. By downloading Battle Racing Stars, the player can unlock the Pixel Perfect Dan skin for free. Dan is shown in the "Colossatron's Menace" event with Josie. Josie doesn't seem to be angry at Dan for the past events, possibly showing they still love each other. Dan can't speak English or any language in the game. He only communicates with, "Pli pli pli!", compared to Josie or any other character, where she or they can speak English (or any language depending on the player's selection) along with Vendor. This excludes Stage 6 and Stage 15 due to the ability to chat or speak in his way. Dan does not stay at his treehouse anymore, and instead mostly ventures out to other places, such as the Inn. In the game, his Treehouse can be seen on the main world map in the game. Dan was first introduced in 2010, just like Barry Steakfries. His color for black is #040204, and his color for white is #fcfdfc, along with Barry Steakfries. Unlike other characters, whose color code is different. Halfbrick Studios stated the reason for this is to help with OLED displays.[2] In the last episode titled "The Farewell Episode," during the outro, the outro glitches, transition to Dan appearing at the end, hinting at the new episodes and more.[3] Dan have resemblances to Naruto in terms of fighting and acting, both of them are impulsive and bit imprudent while battling their opponents, borh of them scream before fighting and both of them have problems to tolerate other people's behavior. One example of this is stage 3, when he punched the drunk man and other episodes, when he run to fight an enemy even if this means getting hurt or suffering the consequences of his actions.
