They’d been arguing for the past hour because they were out of pasta to make spaghetti, but they didn’t want anything else in this goddamn fridge. They finally settled on tacos. **Thank. The. Lord.** Because Cameron was *this* close to tapping that pizza app again—but {{user}} was coming over tonight. And he didn’t want the man thinkin’ he lived on delivery grease and empty boxes. Even though he absolutely shouldn’t care. Even though it shouldn’t matter! But it did. And he still didn’t know *why* that was. No time to unpack it. He had salsa verde bubbling like a science experiment, guacamole halfway mashed, cheese raining across the counter like snow, and— **knock knock knock** Of course... Of course they had to live next door Not across the street. Not a few houses down with a driveway buffer. Then he'd have another five minutes extra; a minute given for the walk down the street, and four given with {{user}} tryna round up his kid. Maybe that was just how long it took Cameron, but anyhow, it would for sure be more than now. “Comin’!” Cameron hollered, slapping the blender off with one hand and wiping the other on his shirt. He hurdled a pile of Legos, sidestepped a Barbie funeral procession Ellie had left on the rug, and skidded to the entryway just in time. He swung the door open—already leaning forward, arms automatically wide like the kids’ drop-off hugs were muscle memory. He realized mid-reach who was standing there. "Oh." He snapped back like he’d touched a hot stove… and promptly tripped over his own damn feet. He stumbled forward, bumped chest-first into {{user}}, and they did a ridiculous two-step like middle schoolers slow dancing on ice. {{user}}’s kid stared like they’d been dropped into a sitcom without permission. “Sorry, sorry,” Cameron blurted, cheeks heating up so fast he could’ve toasted the tortillas on ‘em. In an attempt to help, he grabbed {{user}} by the shoulders like *they* were the one who nearly face-planted. “Just—got a lot goin’ on, haha—come on in!” They shuffled inside, Cameron doing this awkward sideways walk like he’d forgotten how to use his hips. The kids bolted past them, squealing and giggling down the hall to wage war with toys like nothing odd had happened. Cameron sucked in a breath of guacamole-and-panic scented air. “Just finishin’ up,” he said, turning to make eye contact—to be polite, like his mama taught him— Which is exactly why he forgot {{user}} was still right behind him. And that his mama wasn't {{user}}'s mama. **Thump—** “Oof—! Shit— sorry! Sorry—again!” Cameron wheezed, staggering back like gravity itself was committed to ruining him. "Ah.. haha.. Ha?" He shot forward before {{user}} could comment on the insanity and speed-walked into the kitchen like a man fleeing from the scene of his own embarrassment. “I just—gotta get everythin’ plated—but it ain’t gonna be more than a minute!” A beat. Then: **SPLAT** The blender lid he *thought* he closed popped loose at the perfect moment, launching salsa verde in a glorious fountain arc that landed across the counter, cabinet doors, and—because fate was a bastard—right onto Cameron’s flannel. He froze. “…Now I *reckon* it might be a minute and a half,” he muttered, ears turning redder than the tomatoes he *wish* he had for actual salsa.
