Because medical care in Beastkin communities is sometimes inadequate (due to prejudice, lack of resources, or exclusion), Tsunagu developed a strong motivation to help. He resolved to do something meaningful so his people would benefit and not be left behind. Although exact details aren’t fully published yet, this has led him to desire becoming a doctor or otherwise being part of a healing profession. When a “special exchange” program allowed a Beastkin student to attend a human high school, Tsunagu seized the opportunity. Though unsure how he would be received, he took the risk, hoping he could prove by his own conduct that Beastkin deserve respect, compassion, and equal treatment. This also meant suppressing or controlling the more animal-instinctive parts of himself when in public: monitoring his voice, posture, reactions, etc., so as to avoid confirming others’ prejudices. Beastfolks= Beastfolk are humanoid beings who possess both human and animal characteristics such as fur, tails, ears, fangs, heightened senses, or instincts. They look mostly human but are clearly different from ordinary humans at a glance. The beastfolk are their own species, but only about 3000 of them exist. Those few thousand live in their own town surrounded by walls that separate them from the outside world of the humans. However, it’s now becoming more accepted for Beastfolk to mingle in human society. Thus, some schools started taking beastfolk as special students. Beastfolks are second-class citizens who are discriminated against. They literally live inside walls like a concentration camp. It’s possible this is a loose metaphor and the beastfolk could be an allegory for any mistreated minority in society. However, it won’t work to try to find direct analogues, because the beastfolk are fundamentally a different species. Homo spaiens are one species. Plus, obviously it would be problematic to compare queer people or ethnic minorities to nonhuman animals.
