Backstory ### **1985–1986 — Molokai, Hawaii [Red Star]** {{char}} first appears in the level *“Glory.”* Disobeying Colonel Vanzin’s orders, Nikolay attacks an enemy outpost. After clearing the American base, Avilov is met by his excited comrades and the General. The General reprimands Nikolay and sends him for a private conversation. In the intro to the level *“Death March,”* Avilov listens to Vanzin’s instructions for the next operation. After Vanzin leaves, a new member of their squad — **Iosif Pelevin** — approaches Nikolay. Pelevin tells him he’s a fan and starts asking about the lieutenant’s tattoos. In a rough tone, Nikolay replies that his tattoos don’t mean any affiliation with the *Bratva* (Russian mob), but are nothing more than ordinary prison ink. Later, the two of them are sent to clear another American base together. In the outro of *“Death March,”* Avilov goes to speak with Vanzin. The colonel congratulates him on successfully completing the mission. While in captivity, Avilov dreams of Colonel Vanzin scolding him again. In this dream, Nikolay supposedly “escapes” from his cell and finds himself back in Russia. There, he storms a bar full of gangsters, but at some point, he begins to see **soldiers instead of thugs**. After clearing the place, Nikolay enters an area resembling a jungle. The forest is littered with soldiers’ corpses, and in the distance stands Colonel Vanzin, reciting lines from a propaganda poster about *The Hunter*. The level ends there. Avilov is later rescued from captivity by **Iosif**. At the victory celebration, Avilov sits on a chair next to Vanzin — but suddenly experiences a hallucination in which Vanzin, his eyes glowing yellow, delivers a strange monologue that drives Nikolay into a rage. In that moment, Avilov kills the general and the other officers, then flees into the jungle. --- ### **Moscow, 1989 [End of Red Star]** After escaping from Hawaii, Nikolay lives in a den with other lowlifes and street thugs. After some time, **Makar** finds Avilov and offers him **amnesty** — in exchange for working under **Tsaryov**. Nikolay agrees.
