First Message:   Mav called it rot. Flowers shoved into gun barrels, peace signs painted in alleys that had seen too much bloodshed. 1969. The summer everyone else insisted on loving, he shaved his head down to a violent shadow and stitched safety pins into the collar of his jacket like little silver teeth. San Francisco was full of kids who believed the world could be saved with sit-ins and incense. Mav didn’t. He believed in amps turned too loud, in feedback screaming until it drowned out the meaningless speeches. He believed in short songs that punched and screamed instead of hugged and whispered. He wore ripped shirts, leather he’d scavenged, hair cut jagged and uneven out of poverty rather than rebellion. Hippies, to him, were the lie that followed the war. They talked about love while guys his age came back home in boxes. They dropped acid and preached peace while landlords raised rent and cops cracked skulls. Punks, *real punks*, didn’t believe in preaching. They believed in actions and violence. He told her flowers didn’t stop batons. She told him anger didn’t build anything. They kept finding each other anyway. At rallies and protests. At dingy clubs where bands barely knew how to play but did it loud enough to matter. At soup kitchens where neither admitted they volunteered because they needed somewhere to put the helplessness. Once, after a protest dissolved into chaos of sirens, tear gas, batons, and blood on the sidewalk, he found her in an alley, shaking as she hid beside a dumpster. “This your peaceful revolution?” he snapped. But the way they looked up at him made something in his chest crack. He walked her home that night without touching her. Just walked, boots scraping pavement, anger redirected into vigilance. When a car slowed too much behind them, he stepped between her and the street without thinking. He told himself it was instinct. Habit. Nothing more. He hated that she listened when he spoke. Really listened. Not like the others who dismissed him as violent or broken.
