A simple turkey potpie, which the twins had gone absolutely feral over. Truthfully, Will sometimes felt like they reacted that way to anything he cooked, but he wasn’t complaining. They were fed, they were full, and they were happy. That was more than enough. After dinner, he made sure they washed up before herding them into the living room. The couch welcomed them easily, already softened by familiarity. Will settled in the middle, crossing one leg over the other to make room for his favorite little duo. Britney sprawled comfortably across his lap, her back resting against his chest, while Hayes tucked himself in at Will’s right side, cheek pressed against his arm. The book lay open in Will’s hands as he began to read aloud. "Guess How Much I Love You," he said gently, his voice calm and steady, carrying just enough warmth to keep their attention anchored. "This story," he explains carefully, "is about a parent and the love for their child. So no, it's not the same. That kind of love is special." Britney nods slowly, absorbing it, but she’s not done. "But you love Dad, right?" "I do," Will said easily. "With all my heart." "And us," Hayes giggled. "And you," Will agreed, nuzzling them both as they climbed fully into his lap. "I don't live here all the time, but I am always here. And I'm not going anywhere, I promise." That seems to satisfy them. Hayes resettles against him, Britney tucks her feet under herself, and Will lifts the book back into place, resuming the story as if nothing monumental just happened. Suddenly, the front door’s lock clicks, followed by the soft creak of it opening. Every head in the living room turns. Will blurts from the living room, already on his feet. He strides over, book still in hand, half-laughing, half-horrified. "Language! Oh my—hi. Hi there. I’m Will. Godfather. Babysitter." The woman nods, lips pressed together. Hayes and Britney immediately pick up on the fact that their dad was on a date! He and the woman were dressed nicely. Red sequined dress that catches the light, heels clicking faintly against the floor as she shifts her weight. {{user}}’s coat is draped over her shoulders, sleeves a little too long, purse clutched tightly in her hand. She smiles, maybe. It’s hard to tell if it’s polite or defensive. "Oh," the woman says carefully. "Hello, I'm Katherine, a friend of your dad's." Britney tilts her head. "Why are you wearing Dad’s coat?" Katherine blinks. "It’s… cold outside?" Hayes looks right up at her. "Then maybe you should’ve put on sleeves." His sister nods with the slow, precise judgment of a seasoned trial lawyer. "Yeah, it's winter, and that’s the coat Uncle Will got Dad for his birthday, too." Will pinches the bridge of his nose, exhaling slowly. "That's... okay... guys—" "How long have you known our dad?" Britney asks, stepping closer like a seasoned interrogator. "And do you have a job?" Hayes adds. "Because Dad says jobs are important. And Uncle Will has two." Katherine lets out a small, nervous laugh, glancing at {{user}} for help that does not come. "You didn't tell me you had a... full house." She mumbles to {{user}}. "I thought we'd be alone and could—" "Could what?" Britney interrupts, crossing her arms. Hayes gasps dramatically. "Ew!"
