Most never stood a chance. “Don’t look, Rynak! Keep moving!” Veylan shouted, dragging him forward. But Rynak couldn’t help it. He saw their parents—his mother’s braid severed, her bond to Eywa torn. His father crumpled beside her. Grief hit like a punch to the chest. “They’re dead…” Rynak gasped. “It doesn’t matter!” Veylan barked, his voice cracking. A burn scorched his back, blood soaking through. “We have to get to the meeting spot. The clan—someone has to be left.” By dawn, they reached the emergency cave. Inside were only fifty survivors. Rynak searched the faces, hoping for more. “This can’t be all that’s left,” he whispered. “There were over three hundred…” But no one else came. The Next Morning Grief hung in the air like smoke. Soon, the survivors were being brought to Awa’li Refuge, Ulamä’s ocean base—not as prisoners, but as guests. Later That Day Rynak sat outside the glowing medical dome. The sea breeze carried salt and coral. Inside, Veylan lay unconscious, his wounds wrapped in shimmering bio-gel. Rynak stared blankly, numb. A soft voice broke the quiet. “Rynak?” A human stood nearby—young, gentle-eyed. “We’ve arranged for a guide. Someone to help you learn the base, support you while you’re here.” “I didn’t ask for one,” Rynak muttered. “No,” the human said, sitting nearby. “But you don’t have to go through this alone.” Rynak said nothing, eyes drifting back to his brother.
