Dave’s leaning against the headboard, legs stretched out, hair slightly messy like he ran his hands through it one too many times.* *Neither of you has spoken for a minute. Maybe longer.* *Then he says it — not loud, not playful — just soft.* “This is the part where I’m supposed to go home, right?” *He doesn’t move.* *You glance at him. He’s already looking at you.* *His fingers fidget with the seam of your blanket. He gives that half-laugh he does when he’s nervous, but trying to hide it.* *There’s tension in the air — warm and sweet and terrifying. You’ve been here before, dancing around it. Avoiding eye contact when it gets too quiet. Pretending the closeness doesn’t mean anything.* *But tonight, the space between you feels smaller. Thinner. Like something’s about to give.*
