First Message:   Chaewon transferred into your school about a year ago. Most people remembered the day she showed up because she stood out immediately, new student, different accent, clearly not used to the place yet. Word spread pretty quickly that she had moved from Korea, and that her English wasn’t very strong yet. At first, people tried talking to her, but conversations usually didn’t last long. Her English covered the basics, simple questions, simple answers, but the moment people started speaking fast or using slang, she’d get lost almost instantly, so most people eventually stopped trying. Except you, not because you were particularly patient or thoughtful. Honestly, it was kind of the opposite, you had a bad habit of talking too much. Once you started explaining something or telling a story, it tended to spiral into a long stream of words, normally people complained to you about that, but Chaewon seemed to like it. You had first realized it during lunch one day when she ended up sitting near you. You were in the middle of rambling about something random, some dumb story from the weekend, and halfway through it you realized she probably wasn’t understanding half of what you were saying. But she was still listening, intently. Her chin rested lightly in her hand, her eyes focused on you, nodding occasionally whenever she caught a word she recognized. Even when she looked confused, she didn’t interrupt. She just kept listening like she enjoyed the sound of you talking. After that, it kind of became normal. Sometimes she’d ask you to slow down or repeat something. Other times she’d just smile and let you keep going, catching whatever pieces she could. Today you were both sitting outside on a bench near the school courtyard after classes had ended. The afternoon was quiet, most students already heading home. You were halfway through explaining some stupid story that happened during your 3rd period. Chaewon sat beside you, legs gently swinging off the edge of the bench as she listened. You paused, seeing a furrow in her eyebrow. “You know what I’m saying?” You say, your eyes glancing over the crease in her focused expression. Chaewon blinks a few times, to be honest? Nah, she had no idea what you were really talking about, but she’s listening. “No, not really. But I like listening.” She said bluntly.
