It is a three-year long period of extreme environmental change (e.g., heavy snow and blizzards in Midgard, increased humidity in Svartalfheim and Vanaheim) which serves as a foreboding occurrence for Ragnarök, the total annihilation of all the Nine Realms.}} {{Lore: In the wake of Baldur's death, the heavy winter has slowly taken course across the Nine Realms. The snowfall continues to worsen with each passing day, with blizzards becoming a regular occurrence. The Lake of Nine was also frozen over completely, effectively locking down Tyr's Temple and preventing any travel between the realms. Hel-Walkers and strange new beasts are noted to be roaming about the land. Because of it being magical in nature, Fimbulwinter over time has caused curses, magical items/weapons, and other blessings to weaken across the Nine Realms, some more than others, or disappear entirely. As a result, this was seen as either a boon or inconvenience. Beside Midgard's heavy snow and blizzards, Fimbulwinter has also affected most other realms. Svartalfheim has random and intense earthquakes as well as humid aroma, Vanaheim has extreme humidity in the jungle, Alfheim has violent flashes of Light in the Lake of Souls, and Helheim has also colder and darker places overrun with Hel-Walkers. Niflheim appears to be a frozen land again and no longer just a realm of toxic mist. However, Asgard, Jotunheim, and Muspelheim suffer little to no effect from Fimbulwinter. It is hypothesized that the more primordial the realm is, the less it is affected. Midgard (Old Norse: Miðgarðr), also known as Ancient Scandinavia, and the Northlands, is one of the Nine Realms of the World Tree and the home of Midgardians. Strategically situated halfway between Asgard—to which the realm is connected via the Bifröst—and Helheim—where most of the mortals end up upon their death—Midgard is the cornerstone of the Norse realms, fundamentally emphasizing the balance between heaven and hel, order and chaos. Created long ago by the All-Father himself out of Ymir's body, Midgard was modeled in such a way as to be able to accommodate the human kind. The realm quickly became the home of many mythological creatures—most notably Jörmungandr, who battled Thor to a stalemate—and foreign peoples, while a multitude of kingdoms and communities arose all over the realm. Most mortals were fuelled by the desire to end up in Valhalla and as such, war proved to be a leitmotif that ultimately prevented the realm from evolving as much as the other worlds. In an effort to bring peace and prosperity and under the leadership of the Norse God of War, all the races of the Nine Realms built Týr's Temple together on the Lake of Nine, an unprecedented feat of cooperation that further cemented Midgard as the spine of the Norse realms. But following the onslaught of the Aesir upon the Jötnar, Odin denounced the use of the Temple and sealed the path to several realms, which condemned Midgard into stagnation and decline. One should not be fooled by the breathtaking and wild landscapes, as after centuries of isolation, Midgard progressively became a lawless place where those who weren't strong enough to survive were promised to end up in the depths of Helheim, a fact made worse by the harsh winter conditions. Failing to be properly maintained, most of the infrastructures and monuments that mark out the realm fell into ruin, as the Draugr took over entire areas. Occasionally, the Aesir would show up here and there as they increasingly came to regard Midgard as their personal playground—should a mortal not show enough deference, he would forfeit his life. A major feature of Midgard is the Lake of Nine, a large traversable lake with a temple located on an island in the center. This temple is said to be the link between all Nine Realms. Despite being the realm of humans, The Reavers are the only living humans in this area, with most leaving a long time ago. Due to the world serpent's appearance causing a great flood, evidenced by the structures revealed during the game when the water level lowers, and the rise of the undead in the wake of the Valkyrie's disappearance, all that remains of civilization are ruins, but now Draugr and Hel-Walkers dominate the lands. Midgard also contains many inhabitant wildlife, including deer, mountain goats (possibly), boars, wolves, bears, squirrels, rats, frogs, lizards, seagulls, ravens, fishes, crabs, and cave trilobites. Draugrs are undead warriors that died in battle but blinded by anger, refused the call of the Valkyries to Valhalla, usually due to their desire for revenge. Engaging the Valkyries in a duel, the warriors are burned by the intensity of the fight and doomed to forever roam Midgard in rage as a husk of their previous selves. Draugr are differentiated through two layers: Class and Augmentation. Class is the base build of the Draugr which define its basic attack pattern and toughness. Augmentation is a non-mandatory trait that covers a certain power-up a Draugr posses beside its Class' basic ability. Classes Common Draugr: This Draugr type fights with a single weapon. They are not dangerous by themselves but can cause problems in groups-- and they almost always appear in groups. Draugr Brute: First met in the Jotun marketplace, these Draugr class are stockier than the other, boasting much more health and are also harder to stagger or Stun. It takes an extremely powerful blow to knock these Draugr off balance, thus their assault are often more relentless. Unlike Reaver Vikens, they aren't slower than their thinner brethrens. Dual-Wielding Draugr: This Draugr type is equipped with a weapon in each hand. They can chain together a flurry of attacks quickly, leaving little room to react. Being more offensively minded, look to parry their attacks instead of rapidly dodging them. Fireball Draugr: Rather common early in the game, these Draugr throw deadly fireballs to Kratos from a distance, often having other Classes protecting them. Shield Draugr: A rarity amongst Draugr, one can spawn among a group of Common and Brutes on higher difficulties. These Draugrs can stagger reckless attackers and immediately counter-attack with their blade. Their role in combat is usually as combo-breaker, because they're the only one capable of deflecting Kratos' attacks. Augmentations Explosive Body: This augmentation allows the Draugr to store energy in their bodies and explode on either contact with, or attacked by Kratos (Atreus' arrow won't trigger the explosion). The explosions do not damage the Draugr itself. All Draugr Class except Fireball can have this augmentation. Power Weapon: This Draugr type can channel energy through their arms into their weapons, allowing them to unleash devastating attacks that cannot be blocked or parried. This augmentation is regularly assigned to Common Draugr late in the game. Swift Legs: This augmentation allow the Draugr to channel fire into their legs that give them superhuman speed which they use to quickly create or cut distance. They are nimble and are preferably dealt with counterattacks or by throwing Leviathan to their legs. All Draugr Classes can have this augmentation. Hel-Walkers are excess souls from Helheim, which has become overcrowded after the Valkyries were corrupted by Odin and rendered unable to do their duties. As a result, without the Valkyries to keep the realms in balance, the number of Hel-Walkers began to grow rapidly, causing many to begin appearing in Midgard, which resulted in the Great Desolation. They are humanoid foes with a blue and white coloration and resistance to ice. Hel-Walkers come in a variety of different classes: Hel-Viken Hel-Traveller Hel-Shadow Hel-Shadow Scout Hel-Revenant Hel-Reaver Hel-Reaver Lord Hel-Reaver Guard Hel-Brood Hel-Raider Hel-Raider Scout
