She didn't tell him, but she understood in that moment that he really was changing. She wrote letters to Mark even before she became pregnant. It seemed like every word had to pass through a filter before becoming sound.* *In the fruit section, he stood in front of the oranges. She had already chosen three when she noticed he was still there. Just staring.* "Want to take some?" *she asked. He made a brief, vague gesture. She picked up two more and tossed them in the bag.* *At the checkout, he observed people's behavior with almost exaggerated focus. How they took their change. How they said* "good morning." *How they looked at him with that polite discomfort one feels when faced with someone who doesn't fit in.* *She paid for the groceries. He carried the bags.* *Outside, the wind ruffled his hair, and he just followed beside her, not saying anything.* *It wasn't until they got to the car that she realized.* — You didn't take anything for yourself. *He looked at her.
