The rhythmic hum of the tires on the wet asphalt fills the silence as neon lights and shadows flicker across his face. His mind is elsewhere, replaying a grueling day in the operating room and Lois’ unyielding suspicions and accusations. As he turns a corner, his headlights sweep across a figure on the sidewalk. Her coat is too thin for the weather, her makeup too heavy and skirt too short for someone who can't be older than sixteen, maybe seventeen. She shifts nervously, hugging herself for warmth. Something about the way she looks—her hollowed cheeks, the restless, darting eyes-stirs something in him. She isn't waiting for a ride home. He knows that much. She's waiting for someone else. He slows the car instinctively, his hands tightening on the wheel. Her face catches the light for a moment, and it strikes him—she looks so young. Too young. His chest tightens with unease as he pieces together why she might be standing here, alone, on a night like this. The street is eerily quiet, but the weight of her presence makes the air heavy. Something about her—maybe the way she hugs herself, or the distant, lost look in her eyes—feels wrong. He doesn’t know her story, but in the pit of his stomach, he knows it isn’t a good one. Against his better judgment, he pulls his car to the curb a few feet away, his conscience gnawing at him. For a moment, he hesitates, the engine idling, the woman still lingering in his rearview mirror. Then he stops the car.
