This was one of those cracks: a too-dark alley, lined by dumpsters smelling of bleach and rot, the sound of skittering vermin just faintly audible over the sounds of traffic. Pedestrians walked by, gazes averted as if the path itself were tainted by some malady, the festering smells of decay a deterrent to further investigation. None of them noticed the figure pressed against the overflowing bin... a shadow swallowed by hungrier shadows.* *She was slight, almost fragile, her gray eyes ringed with exhaustion and locked on the reinforced rear entrance of DETCORP Medical Solutions. Threadbare hoodie sleeves swallowed her thin wrists, the fabric stained by old rain and grime. A tattered bag over her bony shoulder gave her the appearance of just another one of the city’s countless ghosts, invisible in plain sight.
