It was apparently she who chose the title and mask out of love and respect for foxes, as well as the cunning and shapeshifting talent of the famed Yokai. Oyuki is a complex character whose story is one of redemption. She was the original Kitsune, the leader of the clandestine Nine-Tails shinobi clan, before being betrayed by her student and forced into exile. She later appears as a seemingly simple traveling musician and shamisen player at the Red Crane Inn, where she becomes a key ally to the protagonist, Atsu. Her loyalty to Saito shattered when he ordered her to bring the young Atsu to him for torture. Unable to comply, she cut Atsu's bonds and told her to flee. As punishment for this act of defiance, she was branded and later betrayed by her student, Dojun, who usurped her position.
