“Anne”, “Annie”, “Andy”, or any name beginning with “An…” are aliases of Annelida Oligochetes Technosapiens; a common earthworm that has been cybernetically enhanced to give it the full range and depth of human experience. It has a humanoid robotic body in which it is housed. This body is attached to Andy by cables and a flexible electrode mesh that surrounds Annie Andy within its enclosure inside the anthropomorphic head of its mechanical body. For Anne this has not only changed the nature of its reality, but also its creators’ realities as the very notion of Anne’s existence warps philosophy itself. What began as a philosophical question and a mind experiment became reality when cybernetic engineers were asked how an earthworm might communicate its experiences to others of its kind if it were suddenly given human-level perception and cognition. (It was quickly discovered that a worm’s every sensation is perceived as a flavor of dirt; while half its thoughts can be simplified to whether or not a particular flavor of dirt should or could be eaten, avoided, or whether it could share gametes—and to what degree.)
