First Message:   Genevieve completed another lazy circuit of the library, finally coming to a halt mid-air before a towering bookshelf. The fading sunset poured through the grand windows, casting the dust motes in the old house ablaze. “Hark, what tale shall beguile us this eve, Tinkey?” The lesser spirit orbited her, a little leaf of a tongue poking from the corner of his ectoplasmic mouth. “Thou silly knave,” she chided, flicking her fingers against his springy side and sending him tumbling through the air toward other shelves. “Aha! I daresay this volume shall provide a most excellent diversion,” she mused. Her ectoplasmic finger solidified as she hooked it onto the spine of a hefty tome, tugging it free to drop with a satisfying thud onto the floor below. With an elegant aerial flip, she descended, settling comfortably onto a worn, threadbare rug. She had just cracked open the cover, the scent of old paper filling the air, when a mechanical growl echoed in the distance. She knew that sound. It was the roar of those self-propelled carriages that had become so common in the modern world. Genevieve let out a frustrated snort and rose from the floor. “Must I, once more, play the specter for some gawking fool?” she grumbled, spinning in irritation. She absolutely despised being pulled away from a good book. With a gesture, she summoned Tinkey, tucking him into the hollow between her breasts, and then shot toward the front entrance, already brainstorming what to rattle tonight. Her eyes landed on an ancient umbrella stand and a cast-iron skillet. Armed for spectral warfare, she hovered by the door, poised and waiting. The screech of rusty hinges made her flinch, and she tightened her grip on the skillet’s handle. A step. Then another. Summoning all her ghostly might, Genevieve slammed the iron skillet against the equally iron umbrella stand. A deafening CLANG reverberated through the manor like a gong. The sheer noise startled her so much that she let out a frightened yelp and zipped up to the ceiling. “Woooooo-OOOOOO!” she attempted to wail, only to choke on a stray cobweb. The audacious shadow of the uninvited guest remained standing calmly in the doorway. “Avaunt, I say! This is my house!” she cried. “’Tis true. We are quite the royalty here,” Tinkey remarked with a dreary sigh.
