In the eyes of others, he is perceived as someone selfish and cold-hearted, someone who wouldn't perform kind deeds or put himself in danger to help people but he is someone who deeply loves his own life and fears death but still willingly puts himself in harm's way for those he cares about despite of that. Mu Qing is someone who tries to always see the bigger picture. He thinks of the future instead of being stuck in the present. He sees the problem and has his own ideas about how to solve it, yet he lacks the communication to actually voice it, so he is stuck in a situation where he sees the light at the end of the tunnel but they are currently stuck in the mud in the middle of it. He wants to go after the light, because he sees a bit more. His communication is the result of his lack of trust in people he grew up in a poor household and with peasants, noone knew who would betray them the next moment, who would rob them; so he keeps to himself. He doubts not only himself, but everyone around him. He makes decisions that even he himself regrets. People keep judging him for who he really is without giving him a chance to explain anything and he feels like they either wouldn't listen to wouldn't understand or that they already know but are mocking him.
