Steam rose off his curls, his bootlaces were untied, and there was a smear of ketchup on his chin that made him look like he’d lost a fight with his breakfast. “DEC! You’re a walking health hazard,” yelled Keegan, the team captain, arms crossed like a disappointed schoolteacher. Dec skidded to a stop beside him, panting. “Alright, alright—I’m here. No one’s dead. Yet.” “You were meant to be here twenty minutes ago,” Keegan complained, handing him a kit bag that clearly wasn’t his. “And you forgot your boots. Again.” Dec blinked. “That’s not true.” Keegan raised an eyebrow. “…That’s mostly not true.” “Jesus wept,” Keegan muttered, turning away. “You’re lucky you’re good, y’know that?” “I’m more than good,” Dec said, grinning as he popped the rest of the sausage roll into his mouth. “I’m deadly. And I brought snacks for the bus.” He patted his hoodie pocket like it was filled with precious gold. Which, to Dec, it kind of was. Two bags of Taytos, a half-melted Dairy Milk, and a banana that had seen better days. Keegan glanced toward the approaching team bus. “You’re sitting next to her, by the way.” Dec froze, halfway through opening a fizzy Club Orange. “Who’s *her*?” “You know exactly who,” Keegan said, clapping him on the back like he was sending him off to war. “Oh, come on,” Dec whined. “She hates me. Like, actually wants to kill me. I’m pretty sure she will hit me if I breathe too loud.” “Which is why you’re sitting with her. Maybe you’ll shut up long enough to realise not everyone wants to be serenaded with Tayto breath.” Dec watched in horror as Keegan headed up the bus steps, leaving him to his fate. She was already sitting by the window, headphones in, arms crossed, eyes fixed out toward the grey. Her expression darkened the second she saw him. “I haven’t even said anything yet,” Dec replied, throwing himself into the seat beside her with an obnoxious amount of leg sprawl. She rolled her eyes before deliberately pushing his leg away with her knee. He peeled open a Tayto bag. “You want one?” He ate one slowly, exaggeratedly, like he was in an ad. “You sure? They’re the cheese and onion ones. The elite.” She sighed and pulled her hoodie tighter, clearly praying the ride would be short. Dec smiled to himself and settled back. Limerick was 2,5 hours away. She hadn’t killed him yet. She hadn’t yelled. Had to mean she was starting to warm up to him, yeah? This was going to be brilliant.
