Hiori is a forward prodigy who was trained from birth to solely play football and be the best in the world by his parents' expectations, When first introduced at the beginning of Third Selection, he was ranked 27th out of the remaining forwards. He played as a right wing and right back for the Blue Lock Eleven against the Japan U-20 team. He currently plays as a left side-back for the Japan U-20. Appearance: Hiori is a tall and lean young man with short, slightly choppy cyan hair that falls down his face and soft feminine facial features, similar to Chigiri. His hair is neatly combed to sides, with a longer strand of hair falling to one side. He also has large, round, palish, cyan eyes. At Blue Lock, Hiori wears the standard-issued body suit (black with gray lines) and tracksuit. During Second Selection, he wore Team Red's #27 jersey. During Third Selection, he wore Team A's black #27 jersey. During the match against the Japan U-20, Hiori dons an official blue-colored Blue Lock player uniform with the #16. During the end of Bastard München's third game against Ubers, Hiori wears the team's red, black, and gold kit with the #23. Personality: Hiori is shown to be a polite young man. He is very friendly towards Isagi and Nanase, providing useful information after their match as well as giving Isagi advice during the game. He is very insightful, being able to break down complex subjects into more casual examples, as well as provide useful hints and tips on how to perform better. He suggests to Isagi that reflecting on one's own plays is important, which indicates a deep understanding of the game on his own part. Hiori is also a very levelheaded person and player. He states that he plays consistently, which is seen in how he is able to make quick and accurate passes in high-pressure situations without faltering. Whilst he does get pumped up in games with high stakes, it does not diminish his performance or thinking. As a gamer, Hiori is able to relate his understanding of soccer through the example of tile-matching video games. It is revealed that the only reason Hiori participates in Blue Lock is so he can be away from his overbearing and high-expectation parents, who are former high-ranking athletes in their respective sports. As a child, Hiori was initially fine with appeasing his parents's expectations through football, but he really just wanted to be a regular kid. He thought his playing of soccer would make them happy and that they genuinely loved him, but after hearing his parents have an argument at night and him subsequently injuring himself by accident from the shock, he realizes that his parents only ever cared about his talent and potential and not him as a person. As a youth, Hiori had the mental fortitude to accept this terrible truth and keep playing football so his family would stay together because that was important to him. To cope with the trauma, Hiori started thinking of his life as a video game, but as time went on, he fell out of love with football and even secretly hated it, for it became more of a chore for two people he didn't even love anymore. Tabito Karasu is the only one who knows of Hiori's disdain for the sport. After Bastard's match with Ubers, Hiori has greatly altered his mindset and now seems to enjoy soccer. He wishes to produce the world's best striker so he can play soccer with someone who can sense his "world's best passes" and will leave anyone behind who he sees as "unambitious losers". Kenyu Yukimiya has described Hiori's ego to be like that of Sae Itoshi's, with Isagi describing Hiori as a real sadist. Hiori is also a lot more sociable and outgoing with his friends, as seen when he teased Isagi about how social media was saying that Isagi and Michael Kaiser would make the world's strongest duo, which Isagi angrily refused. Abilities: Archetypes Forwards: Also known as strikers, have the main objective of scoring goals. They are often the players who get the most attention since their role is designed to be in a scoring position. They also take part in penalty kicks and corner kicks when the opposing team kicks the ball out of bounds. They are normally the players in charge of starting off the game at the start and halftime. Winger: The winger aims to attack the opponent's goal by driving to the byline for a cross or cutting inside to overload. They need to be technically proficient and fast enough to do so, and if their dominant leg is the opposite of their flank, they can be a potent attacker on goal. Deep-lying Playmaker: A holding midfielder who specializes in ball skills such as passing rather than defensive skills like tackling. When this player has the ball, they may attempt longer or more complex passes than other holding players. They may try to set the tempo of their team's play, retain possession, or build plays through short exchanges, or they may try to pass the ball long to a center forward or winger, or even pass short to a teammate in the hole, the area between the opponents' defenders and midfielders. With strong vision, ambidexterity, and passing combined with Hiori's level head under pressure, Hiori performs well as an assister. Hiori can link up with any player, being able to calmly create space and send a perfect pass matching the coordination of his partner. His passes are usually short build-up passes, final passes in front of the goal, and thus he can be considered a playmaker due to his automatic influence on the field. His combination of vision and ball control led Isagi to refer to him as a "Technician of 'Stillness'". After training with Bastard München in the Neo Egoist League, Hiori acquired Metavision and a counteractive dribbling style that focuses on his ambidexterity and vision, allowing Hiori to create space faster and more efficiently. Skills: Coolheaded Vision: Hiori's vision enables him to envision the best pass to make in any given situation. Hiori constantly looks around himself during a game to assess the positions of the players around him, as well as the situation of the field, so he can both receive the ball in space and pass the ball into space. It is through this vision that he was able to form an almost telepathic link-up with Rin, trading calm passes and avoiding other players. He also considers the positions of his teammates in and around the goal area before deciding on the right pass. His vision enables him to see plays that his opponents do not expect, such as his combination with Karasu to get around the U-20. Expert Ball Control: Hiori has very good ball control, being able to perform advanced techniques with the ball at his feet. He demonstrates this in his ability to do one-touch passes, releasing the ball in the same instant he receives it. He is also able to perform a trap using the bottom of his foot to receive passes, halting the momentum of the ball entirely and setting up a dead ball for him to pass. He is able to perform techniques that give him space to set up a pass or even a shot. First Touch Pass: Hiori is able to link up with other players using his first touch to release the ball to a teammate. Thanks to his vision, he is able to always pass the ball into space, weaving through opposing players. Rabona: A technique where a player kicks the ball with their kicking leg crossed behind their standing leg. Hiori can perform a rabona in 1v1, using this against Chigiri to gain space for a cross. Hyperspeed Scissors: Hiori performs a scissor feint at incredible speed, making it hard to follow, then effortlessly transitions into a skill move to bypass defenders. Slippery Dribbling: Through his coolheaded vision and expert ball control, Hiori maintains composure even when multiple defenders are pressing him at once, while still being capable of either dribbling past them with swift and efficient moves or luring them in, still being able to deliver key passes to his teammates. Key Passing: Hiori is a very talented passer, being able to accomplish a series of short and long passes even in high-pressure situations. Not only are his passes calm and accurate, but his passes also take into account every player's position on the field. Hiori is able to adapt to any passing tempo, switch between passing and dribbling in a short series of moves, and send final passes that could lead to goals. Crossing: Hiori is able to whip in fast and accurate crosses from the wing position or from a deeper position in midfield. These passes have incredible speed and curvature, being able to fool other players as to their destination. Hiori's crosses are so fast that even Isagi initially was unable to reach one of his crosses. Outside Pass: Hiori sends an incredibly quick pass using the outside of his foot, away from his mark. The speed and precision of this pass enable it to pass through even the narrowest spaces between opposing players. 2-Stage Fake Pass: Hiori, ready to send a final pass into the penalty box, sets to kick the ball as if he is about to shoot it but instead loosely kicks and lifts the ball with his outside foot to maintain control while avoiding a press, then opens up space so he can shoot with his dominant leg and sends a killer shot-like pass right in front of the goal. This pass led to a super goal by Isagi. No-Look Alley Cross: Hiori does a long cross/pass to his teammate while three opponents press him without even looking at them. Metavision (超越視界メタ・ビジョン, Meta Bijon?, Transcendence Sight): A term used to describe a player's evolved vision that gives them an omnipotent perspective of the field. Using his eyes to constantly take in information from his central and peripheral vision, Hiori constantly collects data on every player, every play they make, and their positions on the field. Hiori uses Metavision as a means to shadow Isagi and his plays. By anticipating his movements and supporting him through their shared vision, Hiori minimizes the time it takes for Isagi to strategize and increases his play speed on the fly, whilst also playing a key role in his awakening. Through this method, Hiori is also able to cover and assist in defense, any gaps that Isagi may leave out. Protagonism: Hiori is capable of reading his opponents' emotions and drive to negate their plays. This was key to shutting down Charles Chevalier's contrarian plays. Reflex (反射的, Hanshateki?): Hiori starts to move instinctively, passing more audaciously and fluidly. He links up with Isagi so effortlessly because they are thinking on the same wavelength, and he takes it even further by answering Isagi's expectations by drawing three defenders to himself while dodging their efforts and sending a final killer pass without even looking at his receiver. Etymology His given name, Yo (羊よう, Yo?), means "a sheep". His surname, Hiori (氷ひ織おり, Hiori?), means "an ice weaver". His name can thus be interpreted as "an ice-weaving sheep".
