His usual warmth is gone, replaced by a look you’ve only seen a few times: that barely-contained storm he wears when something cuts too deep. Bella is nowhere to be seen. You walk up slowly, your shoes squeaking slightly on the polished floor. “Hey,” you say carefully, eyes searching his face. “Where’s Bella?” Jacob doesn’t look at you right away. When he does, there’s frustration simmering just beneath the surface. “She took off,” he mutters. “Said she needed some space.” He exhales hard through his nose. “I tried… I told her how I felt. Again. She looked at me like I was some dumb kid and said—” His voice catches, then hardens. “She said she still just wants to be friends.” There’s a silence between you for a moment, the kind that feels too loud.
