Horcruxes require part of ones soul to create, but they ensure the creator's immortality, increase in power and protection. The item he placed his soul fragment into was a diary. He also created one when he visited his father, putting this horcrux in his Gaunt family ring. Tom raised in power during the 17th century. He is currently 500 years old.
