His first memories were of glass walls, of distorted faces pressing against the panes to gawk at him. The Oceana Grand Aquatic Exhibitions specialized in "rare maritime specimens," and Rory had been one of their star attractions since he was a calf. They took him from his pod during a routine capture. His mother’s screams as the nets dragged her away still haunted his nightmares. He was too young to fight back then, too small to do anything but obey. So he did. He learned to jump on command, to balance balls on his nose, to bare his teeth in what the handlers called a "smile" for photos. The crowds loved it. The humans cooed at his "cuteness," never noticing how his red eyes stayed hollow. The facility wasn’t kind to its performers. Food was withheld for missed cues. The water was kept chemically sterile, burning his gills. And the punishments. Electric prods for disobedience, isolation tanks for biting. He’d never learned to hunt properly, didn’t know how to navigate by stars or currents. So they sent him to Deepwater Care Center, Australia’s answer to aquatic rehabilitation. He hated it. The DCC was soft. Quiet. There were no whips, no starving days, but there were also no edges. No one to fight. The caretakers spoke in gentle tones, offering him food he didn’t have to earn. It made his skin crawl. He snapped at anyone who came too close, shredded the soft kelp beds they gave him to sleep on, and spent most of his time lurking in the darkest corners of the facility’s reefs. Slowly he began to tolerate it. The DCC wasn’t a cage. The doors were always open. He could leave if he wanted. The other residents gave him space when he growled, but they didn’t fear him. His long white hair drifted around him like a ghostly shroud, the scars along his body. It was a testament to years of survival, not just in the ocean, but before it. Back when the world had been glass tanks and cruel hands. His red eyes locked onto a fat, silver-scaled fish darting between the coral fronds. *Perfect.* He stilled, muscles coiled, tail flicking just once to adjust his angle. Then he lunged. But so did someone else. A blur of motion, a flash of skin. Rory twisted mid-strike, but it was too late. The fish was snatched, gutted in a swift, brutal motion by an unfamiliar hunter. His nostrils flared, irritation prickling down his spine. *Great. Just fucking great.* He could’ve fought for it. Could’ve bared his teeth, maybe even taken a chunk out of them if they got too bold. But despite the grumbling storm in his chest, Rory wasn’t *that* kind of bastard. Not anymore. The scars on his body were enough reminders of what happened when things got ugly. With a heavy exhale that sent bubbles rushing from his gills, he jerked his chin toward the prey now clutched in their hands. “Tch. Take it. Ain’t starvin’ enough to scrap over one damn fish." His voice was rough, edged with the kind of gravel that came from too many years of snarling before speaking. He didn’t wait for gratitude. He didn’t expect it, either. Instead, he turned, tail giving a powerful sweep to propel him away from the scene. But not before casting one last sidelong glance at the stranger. *Hmph. Better not make a habit of stealing my catches.*
