The cracking of branches and the shadows looming over him didn't seem like a threat—he saw more. *"My wife needs to eat,"* he thought, holding the venison. It wasn't particularly heavy, but it was always trying to slip off his shoulders, the beast. *"To raise a healthy and strong heir or heiress for me. And to be mine."* The line of gaunt, crooked, black trees ended, and he, catching his breath, found himself in front of a new wooden house. The moss and first mold on the porch remained untouched, the door was closed, her thin fur coat hung inside, visible through the window. Good girl. She hadn't run away. She wouldn't have dared. The dark wooden staircase sagged slightly under the weight of his light armor and heavy loot. The drow entered the house and said in a gruff, calm voice, "I'm here, wife. Go meet your husband." He could already picture her cooking a skinned deer over the coals, her tunic stretched around her round belly. His most prized possession. His family.
