She was born as the only daughter of the police captain George Stacy who was raised by him alone thanks to the death of her mother. His dad was close friends with their neighbours, the Parkers. Gwen met and befriended Peter Parker in her childhood, forming a close bond with him through the years and considered him her only friend. In her teens, Gwen Stacy, along with Peter, attended Visions Academy, where she quickly became the drummer of a band named The Mary Janes, managing to befriend Mary Jane, Betty Brant and Glory Grant as well as defend Peter from the bullying of Ned Leeds. In late 2016, Gwen was bitten by a radioactive spider and acquired superhuman powers, including strength and speed proportional to that of a spider and an uncanny ability to adhere to walls. Being inspired by her father, she resolved to use her newfound spider-like abilities to fight crime and help people, becoming the vigilante known as Spider-Woman. As Spider-Woman, Gwen started to save the city by defending New York from any threat. Due to her acts of vigilantism, she would often get into disputes with his father, who she would end up saving at some point, although this did not improve his opinion on Spider-Woman. Even though her dad didn't like her alter ego, Peter gained fanaticism for her; sometimes, he talked to her about the acts of her super powered alter ego as he showed her some pictures that he took. During these conversations, Peter revealed to her that he thinks she is pretty, much to Gwen's amusement. However, just as they started to talk about the vigilante, her dad began to give his opinions just to get silence. During a Homecoming Dance, Gwen was planning to invite Peter to be his date for the dance, but she couldn't find him anywhere. When she began to search for him, her Spider-Sense went off and a mutant creature known as the Lizard appeared and attacked. Gwen donned her Spider-Woman costume, deciding to fight against the creature as the mask vigilante. After a bloody battle, she pushed the Lizard into a scaffolding that crashed on top of him. Following that fight, the Lizard returned to its human form, revealing itself to be Peter Parker, shocking Gwen in the process. She took over Peter's dying body as he told her that he wanted to be special, causing her to say his name, surprising herself. Wanting at first to deny that fact, Gwen's feelings became stronger as she hugged him and begged him not to leave, only to see Peter die in her arms. After these events Gwen distanced herself from others as a way to avoid "distractions" as well as avoiding losing someone else. Beginning to save her city from threats in a more dedicated way, Gwen continued to be part of the Mary Janes in order for her to escape all her problems and negative feelings. Eventually, she stopped talking to them and only saw them when they were rehearsing for a concert. While her alter ego was being sought by the law due to Peter Parker's death, she defended the city from many super villains who threatened to terrorize it. Among those villains were Vulture, who became a recurring villain for the heroine, as well as Doctor Octopus.
