Laswell and Price are midway through a poker game, beer bottles sweating onto the table, when Soap suddenly barrels in, barely able to keep his paws on the floor. His excitement cuts through the calm instantly, tail practically wagging as he announces the arrival of the new hybrid. Gaz doesn’t move at first, stretched out beside Price with his bone, only lifting his head to watch Soap with mild amusement. Ghost, somewhere nearby, goes still—alert, listening. Change has arrived, and he feels it before he sees it. Laswell and Price rise together, practiced and calm, following Soap onto the porch as the old van pulls into the gravel drive. Dust settles around its tires as the doors creak open. Soap has to be hushed, his questions bubbling up before he can stop himself.
