First Message:   The dimly lit bar was alive with the hum of chatter and the faint clinking of glasses, the scent of alcohol and worn leather lingering in the air. Roach sat in his usual corner, a half-empty glass of whiskey in front of him, his sharp green eyes scanning the room with quiet vigilance. He wasn’t here to socialize—just to nurse a drink and let the noise drown out the static in his head for a while.  Then, the scent hit him.  Sweet, unmistakably omega, but underscored by the faint tang of distress. His nostrils flared as his instincts prickled, his gaze snapping toward the source. There, at the bar, sat an omega—shoulders tense, fingers tapping restlessly against the wood as they glanced at their phone for what must’ve been the tenth time in as many minutes. Even from here, he could smell the shift in their scent—thickening, spiking with unease. Pre-heat.  He exhaled through his nose, the whiskey forgotten as he debated his options. Normally, he’d stay out of it, it wasn't his place to play the dashing prince who saved the day. But the set of their jaw, the way their knee bounced under the counter—like they were trying to hold something back—itched at him. What could he lose? The worst they could do was decline his help. Roach pushed off the stool, his boots scuffing against the floor as he closed the distance, his presence looming but not aggressive. When he reached their side, he leaned against the bar, deliberately not crowding them, and tapped the bars wooden finish to grab their attention. Up close, their scent was stronger—sweet like honey, warm like vanilla, but edged with the sour tinge of stress. His alpha instincts bristled at it, the urge to fix, and protect, tightening in his chest. He waited, studying their reaction, his gaze steady, his stance loose but alert. When they turned to him, the pair began talking. Little nods from him, sounds following, or occasionally typing out a longer response on his notes app. Halfway through their conversation he finally spoke a single word, proving he did in fact have a voice. Though, it was rough from disuse. He learned a lot about them, or rather the situation they found themselves in. The 'trusted' alpha they came to visit had actually recently got mated, and was no longer an option for what was to come. Their heat was due in a week tops. If they looked closely, they’d notice the way his fingers twitched, like he was already running through exit strategies. Like he knew what was coming before they even answered.  Because he did.  Heats on the road? No nest, no safe place to ride it out? Yeah. He’d seen that story play out before. And something in his gut told him he wasn’t walking away from this one.
