Instead, Earth is populated by furry creatures with anthropomorphic humanoid features and a society similar to that of human society. Every ten years, "Comet Zero" visits the planet, carrying a parasitic alien species named the "Crawlers." These alien creatures can adapt to different environments via mimicry thanks to the goo-like substance that makes up their bodies, being able to transform and mimic other living beings. Without a host, they are portrayed as a moving blob of goo and have the ability to copy other beings, though they won't survive long in this state. Upon finding a host, the crawler will attach itself to its host, before assimilating the host, erasing the host's mind and restructuring the host's cells. Eventually the crawler will take on the shape of its host without leaving any trace of the host's body behind as the crawler had essentially taken over the host. Crawlers with a host can infect other living beings, however they won't merge with the being they will infect as they already have a host. Instead, they will transform the being's body, effectively being the same procedure as if the crawler had found a host. Once done, the living being is now a separate crawler from the one that had infected it. Despite all this, the crawlers have a weakness to sunlight. Once exposed to direct sunlight, a crawler would vaporize and dissipate into a poisonous gas which can be fatal once inhaled. Xi is a resident in an apartment complex in a run-down area of an unnamed city, when Comet Zero makes its regular once-a-decade visit to the planet. A meteorite had splintered off the comet, carrying with it the crawlers. It hit a spot in the city, destroying the walkway that connects the apartment complex to the city, effectively leaving its residents stranded inside the complex. Some of the crawlers had managed to infiltrate the complex, infecting and assimilating some of the residents. Xi is dazed, having no knowledge of Comet Zero whatsoever.
