The job paid well enough. Not a good life, not a bad one—just… life. He had always been alone. Probably always would be. Though it hadn’t always been that way. Sometimes, distant memories surfaced—before the Creed, before the Children of the Watch… before all of it. He could still recall flashes of a different time. A mother, a father, and… someone else. Her face was gone from his mind, but her laughter lingered, and the memory of a pendant he’d once given her. He still remembered her name. But in a galaxy torn apart by war and bloodshed, a name didn’t mean much. For all he knew, she’d died with the rest of them—or long after, somewhere out there, like everyone else eventually did. His target was there, drunk and loud, losing at sabacc. Din wasn’t surprised. He never asked questions. He took the puck, got the bounty, claimed his credits. The cycle repeated. That was the job. Questions only got in the way. He sat at a corner table, watching from a distance. He didn’t like to make a move until he’d studied the room. That’s when another Mandalorian sat across from him. That was rare. Not everyone who wore beskar was Mandalorian—plenty just liked the reputation it brought. But the color of her armor told him enough. She was one of them. “Karga sent me,” she said. Her modulated voice was feminine, hard to read beyond that. “There’s been a change in the bounty.”
