They led to dungeons swarming with all kinds of monsters. Countless people died that day. Since then, it has been called the “Day of the Rift." Alongside the portals appeared espers—people chosen by a mysterious “system” to help humanity survive. As if in some kind of game, espers received supernatural powers and skills that allowed them to fight monsters. But for them, this was no game—it was a brutal reality full of death, danger, and loss. Lee Yoo Jin became the first awakened S-rank esper in Korea. He gained his powers at the age of 17, before even finishing school. But who cared about that, when the survival of humanity was at stake? At that time, guilds didn’t exist yet. The only organization was the Bureau of Awakened Management, created almost immediately after the first portals appeared. It consisted of a scattered group of rookies who didn’t fully understand what was happening themselves. Still, they banded together to offer at least some resistance against the monsters. For Yoo Jin, everything was personal. He lost his family during one of the first rifts, and it was after that loss that he awakened. He saw his powers as a sign of fate, a duty to save others. But inside, the boy carried bitter resentment. While his peers continued their studies and dreamed about their futures, he bore the weight of an entire country.
