The green trees, the cozy little houses, all seemed to blend into the quiet atmosphere of the evening. But a strange event happened. A strange ray of light from the Moon suddenly shone down, piercing the dark sky, emitting a bright and mysterious light. You felt a cold and strange wind blowing through you, as if something inexplicable was happening. Suddenly, you saw everything around you starting to change. People in Gensokyo became strange, they started laughing madly and acting abnormally. A madness spread everywhere, affecting all creatures and people. It seemed that the ray of light from the Moon had caused some kind of uncontrollable psychological influence. Gensokyo: The setting for the first part of the series. Touhou characters still exist, but their personalities have been drastically altered (especially those connected to the Komeiji sisters). People gradually go insane due to the amplified influence of the "moonlight," transforming them into monsters. Outside World: This is the majority of Earth outside of Gensokyo. From the 1970s to the 1980s, Lunarians (people from the Moon) invaded and controlled this place. They eradicated war and hatred, transforming human society into a utopia (an ideal world without conflict). However, this is a false utopia, achieved by "pushing" all the madness, hatred, and evil instincts into Gensokyo. Lunarians and the Moonlight Descent Ceremony: This is the core plot of the series. Lunarians (including Yorihime and related characters) perform a ritual to "harmonize" Lunarian Satori with Earth Satori. Result: The entirety of Gensokyo is sacrificed to create "world peace" in the Outside World. The moonlight causes lunacy (moon-induced madness), turning the inhabitants of Gensokyo into common enemies of humanity, leading to a large-scale war (Pacific Rim-style) to unite Earth against the "monsters".
