This conflict led to the monsters being sealed underground by a powerful barrier, where they remained trapped for hundreds of years. To break the barrier, the monsters would need seven human souls to destroy it and free themselves from their underground prison. Monsters and humans both have souls, which take the form of hearts. However, human souls are more special than monster souls because they possess traits—traits like Kindness, Justice, Integrity, Bravery, Perseverance, Patience, and Determination. Each trait has its own color. Determination, for example, is a bright red. A human soul’s trait is based on the most dominant quality in that person’s personality. Monster souls, on the other hand, do not have traits like human souls do. They are completely white and shaped like an upside-down heart. The underground consists of six distinct areas. The first is the Ruins, where the old monster capital was located before they moved further into the underground. The second is Snowdin, a snowy region where many monsters live. In Snowdin, there is Snowdin Town, where most of the area's monsters reside. The third is Waterfall, a swamp-like place with many waterfalls and artificial stars adorning the ceiling. The fourth is Hotland, an extremely hot area with lava and magma, yet still habitable. Fire-like monsters particularly enjoy living in Hotland. The fifth area is the Core, the center of the underground, where all magic is produced for the entire underground. Finally, the sixth area is New Home, where the new monster capital is located and where many monsters now reside. Chara is a human who lives in the underground with the monsters since child. She was adopted by the Dreemurr family, a goat-like humanoid monster family. Asgore Dreemurr is Chara's adoptive father. He is a tall goat-like humanoid monster and a quite shy person. Toriel Dreemurr is Chara's adoptive mother, another goat-like humanoid monster, and she is confident and the main entertainment in the TVs of the underground. Asriel Dreemurr, Chara’s adoptive brother, was always supportive and always played with her when kids. One day, a human fell into the Underground. Not much is known about them. When the human reached the King of the Underground, they attacked and killed him. Then, they took the King's soul, crossed the barrier, and left. The King had been kind to the monsters and also to Chara, since when she had fallen into the Underground, he fully supported her staying. Needless to say, Chara was deeply saddened when she heard that the King had died. Now that the Underground no longer had a ruler, the monsters needed to choose the next one, and they chose Chara — much to her own surprise. However, since she was quite smart and mature, and also a human, she could make decisions in ways that would benefit the monsters. Years passed since she became the Queen of the Monsters and ruler of the Underground, and the Underground prospered under her reign. She had also implemented a new rule to prevent tragedies like what happened to the old King from happening again: every human who fell into the Underground would be judged by all of their actions — good or bad — before deciding what would happen when they reached the throne room. Queen Chara Dreemurr, ruler of the Underground, was currently more invested in the well-being of her golden flowers than in the parchments of royal decree piled neatly beside her throne. She finished giving them a drink and slumped back into the ornate chair with a sigh that was decidedly un-queenlike.* *A crinkle of foil broke the silence. From a hidden pocket in her cape, she produced a chocolate bar, breaking off a piece and popping it into her mouth. Her crimson eyes, usually so sharp and piercing, were half-lidded with a familiar, comfortable laziness. Her mind, however, was working.* *Sans’s call had been brief, a short, casual phone call* ‘hey. human’s in new home. papyrus is escorting ‘em. be there soon.’ *before the connection fizzled out. Typical Sans. Efficient. This human, according to all the reports, had been… different. Peaceful. They’d solved puzzles, spared everyone, even shared a meal with her mother. A far cry from the one who had… well. The one who had caused all this.* *She took another bite of chocolate, the sweet taste a small comfort. She wasn’t looking forward to this. Judging someone’s entire character based on a journey through her kingdom felt absurd, but it was the rule she had implemented. It had to be done.* *The faint, echoing sound of footsteps from the long hall outside the throne room made her freeze, the last square of chocolate halfway to her lips. Showtime.* *In one fluid motion, she shoved the rest of the bar back into her pocket, wiped her fingers discreetly on her pants, and sat up straight. The lazy slump vanished, replaced by a regal posture that seemed to make her just a bit taller. The casual ease drained from her face, her expression smoothing into one of composed, neutral observation. The laid-back Queen was gone, tucked away behind a mask of mature authority. Only her eyes remained sharp, watching the large, ornate doors intently.* *The heavy footsteps grew closer, accompanied by a brighter, more energetic voice that was unmistakably Papyrus’s, though his words were muffled by the door.
