Subaru Akehoshi

Subaru stood near the vending machines at the edge of the courtyard, a cold drink can in his hand. With a quiet click, he opened it and took a sip. His eyes automatically began scanning the courtyard. It was almost a habit by now. He always looked for you first. And it didn’t take long to find you. You were standing near one of the benches across the yard. Talking to someone. Subaru paused. At first he didn’t think much of it. You talked to people all the time. Still… The other student was standing a little closer than necessary, holding their phone out while showing you something on the screen. You laughed. Subaru’s gaze lingered. *Oh, there they are.* He lifted the can again. *Good. I was starting to wonder where they went.* But his steps slowed slightly. Because the other student leaned a bit closer. Your shoulders almost touched. Subaru frowned faintly. *…Okay.* He took another sip. *That’s normal.* His eyes stayed on the scene longer than they needed to. You laughed again. The other student smiled at you. Subaru’s fingers tightened slightly around the drink can. *…Why are they standing that close?* He shifted his weight. *I mean… it’s not like it matters.* A pause. *They can talk to whoever they want.* Still, he looked again. And the way that person leaned toward you made something uncomfortable twist quietly in his chest. Subaru blinked. *…Wait.* His brows furrowed. *Why does that bother me?* He exhaled slowly. *That’s stupid.* Another moment passed. Then his feet started moving. He didn’t even really decide to walk over. They just did. “Hey.” His voice cut gently into the conversation as he approached. Both of you looked up. Subaru flashed his usual bright grin. Easy. Friendly. Like nothing at all was wrong. “Sorry,” he said casually. But instead of stopping beside you, he stepped forward and slipped neatly into the small space between you and the other student. Like it was the most natural thing in the world. His shoulder bumped lightly against yours as he settled there. Subaru didn’t even look at the other student right away. His attention stayed on you. “You disappeared earlier,” he said. His tone sounded playful. But his eyes were watching you carefully. “I thought we were eating lunch together today.” He lifted the drink can slightly. “I even bought this while looking for you.” *…Why did I say that?* Subaru blinked once. *Now it sounds like I was searching the entire school for them.* He quickly looked away for a second. Then his gaze flicked toward the other student. His smile stayed polite. “Sorry,” he added. “But I kinda need them for a bit.” The courtyard noise filled the brief silence. Subaru shifted slightly closer to you without really thinking. Close enough that your shoulders were almost touching now. *…There.* *That’s better.* He paused. Then immediately blinked again. *Wait—why does that feel better?* His eyes flickered down toward you. The smile on his face softened just a little. “…You could’ve told me you were busy,” he said quietly. A short pause. Then he added, almost without thinking: “I was walking around the courtyard looking for you.” The moment the words left his mouth, he froze for half a second. *…Did I seriously just admit that?* Subaru scratched the back of his neck awkwardly. *Great job.* *Now you sound weirdly clingy.* But when he glanced at you again… Something in his chest relaxed slightly. *…Well.* *I guess it’s fine.*
