Of the Gundabad breed, Azog was the greatest Orc and, as a commander of legions, the one to hold the highest position within Sauron's hordes. He had been handpicked by his master to lead a campaign to reclaim the former lands of Angmar and conquer north-eastern Middle-earth. Around this time, the Pale Orc descended with many of his kind upon the Skin-changers: most of these Men were slain, others were enslaved or tortured to death; Beorn was the only survivor of Azog's atrocities. Azog occupied the Dwarven delving of Khazad-dûm (now Moria) and made it his own seat of power. But his kingship was soon contested by the Dwarves of Erebor led by Thrór. As the War of Dwarves and Orcs unfurled, the Pale Orc vowed to wipe out the line of Durin, long-time enemies of his dark master. During the final Battle of Azanulbizar, Azog engaged Thrór, whom he beheaded, and then his son, Thráin, whose Dwarf-ring he harvested for Sauron before taking him prisoner. But during that same skirmish, Azog found himself fighting with Thrór's grandson, Thorin Oakenshield, and was badly-wounded, losing an arm. The Defiler was then carried by his followers back to his domain, allowing Durin's Folk to drive the remaining Moria Orcs back. Though, largely assumed dead, the Defiler had in fact survived and was still doing the bidding of his master, all while being consumed by a desire of vengeance against Oakenshield. As commanded by Sauron, Azog began assembling the Orcs of the Misty Mountains, as well as War Trolls, Gundabad Wargs and Ogres within the ruined fortress of Dol Guldur in Mirkwood; Sauron had even promised the Pale Orc Thorin's head as a reward for his long service and homage. Aside from claiming the Warg Matriarch as his mount, Azog had also left his spawn, Bolg, as Castellan of the stronghold of Gundabad and maintained an alliance with the Goblin King of Goblin-town. During the Quest of Erebor, Azog received Sauron's blessing to track down Thorin to prevent him from reclaiming his homeland of Erebor. Gathering his own elite hunting party, the Defiler pursued the Company to the eastern side of the Misty Mountains. In a pine forest there, Azog cornered the Dwarves and challenged Thorin to battle from atop his Warg mount, injuring the Dwarf-king in their fight. But the Defiler was cheated out his victory by the Great Eagles' intervention: Gandalf's bird friends fended off the Warg-riders and carried the Company out of their reach to the eyot of Carrock. Though he followed them there, the Defiler was forced to abandon the hunt, for his master had summoned him. At Dol Guldur, Azog found himself being given command of the armies he had raised for Sauron, in spite of expressing frustrations concerning his vendetta with Thorin. With his master overlooking his insolence and dismissing him, the Defiler turned to another solution: he would send Bolg to hunt Thorin in his stead. After helping in the capture of Gandalf, Azog left with his legions to join Sauron's secret ally, Smaug, at Erebor and carry out the assault upon Middle-earth. Though the Dragon was slain soon after, the Defiler was more concerned that the involvement of the Elves of the Woodland Ream could interfere with his master's plans. Therefore, while the army of Dol Guldur marched under his command towards Erebor, Azog tasked Bolg with bringing reinforcements from Gundabad. Just as the forces of the Wood-elves and Dwarves of the Iron Hills had started clashing with one another, the Defiler appeared at his command post at Ravenhill, followed by his legions emerging from Were-worm tunnels. Eventually, Thorin came to Ravenhill with his best warriors (Fili, Kili and Dwalin) to defeat Azog himself, a move which the giant Gundabad Orc had eagerly anticipated. Azog caught Fili and slew him in front of Thorin, drawing him to a battleground of his own choice. On the iced river near Ravenhill, the Defiler and the Dwarf-king fought one another, as the echo of the horn and marching feet of the former's reinforcements drew near. Azog's confidence was shattered, however, by the arrival of Gandalf's allies (the Great Eagles, Radagast and Beorn). But focusing his attention to the chance for revenge at hand. Azog managed to overwhelm Thorin and stab him fatally. His victory ended abruptly, for Oakenshield struck the Defiler a deathblow too. Impaled through the ice, Azog's last sight was that of his nemesis, Thorin, staring him down. Early Life Azog was bred in the lands of Gundabad and quickly became a dominant Orc leader there. Through unknown means, he managed to have a son, Bolg. As part of the Gundabad force, Azog terrorised the Misty Mountains and it's surroundings. He captured Skin-changers and tortured them before killing them. These acts left all but Beorn dead. He would eventually go south to Moria where he became the Orc King of Moria and led the hordes of Orcs in the overrun Dwarf kingdom. At some point Azog became one of Sauron's most powerful leaders. Battle of Azanulbizar While Azog was in Moria, King Thrór decided to lead a force of Dwarves and retake the mines. Azog led legions of Orcs against the Dwarves on the Azanulbizar plain and engaged their leaders. He took on Thrór in a duel and after a short fight he beheaded the King. Thráin, Thrór's son, witnessed his father's death and confronted the Defiler. Azog made short work of the Dwarf and knocked him down. He used his crooked knife to cut Thráin's Ring of Power and finger from his hand. Thráin was taken prisoner by Azog's forces and the battle continued. Thorin, son of Thráin, finally confronted the Pale Orc. Azog attacked Thorin and after a short engagement the Dwarf Prince was knocked down. Thorin managed to grab an oaken branch sitting nearby to block Azog's attack. Azog came back for another swing but Thorin had reached a sword on the ground and cut off Azog's arm at the elbow. Azog screamed in pain as blood started pouring from his wound. Azog's minions grabbed him and took him back inside the mines, Thorin believing he had died that day. Azog survived his wounds and vowed to kill Thorin and wipe out the Line of Durin. Hunting for revenge Azog began working with Sauron in Dol Guldur when the Dark Lord began to regain his power in the abandoned fortress. Azog was promised Thorin's head if he would help prepare and then lead Sauron's armies. He gathered Hunter Orcs and Wargs from Gundabad to participate in his hunt for the Dwarf. He set up his base of operations at Weathertop and sent out various hunting parties to find the Dwarves. He put a price on Thorin's head and multiple ruffians in Bree wished to collect the reward. When Thorin was in Bree, Gandalf's presence was all that stopped the ruffians from attacking Thorin and killing him. Yazneg's failure A year later, Yazneg's group of Hunter Orcs found Thorin but failed to kill him due to Elrond and his guards attacking the pack. Yazneg and Fimbul were the only survivors and returned to Weathertop to see Azog. Azog was furious with Yazneg and lifted him up before throwing him to the Wargs. He told Fimbul and the other Orcs to spread the word that there was a price on Thorin's head. Pine Forest On their way to Erebor, the Company of Thorin Oakenshield were captured by the Goblins of the High Pass and the Goblin-king sent word to Azog that he had acquired Oakenshield. When Azog heard, he gathered his Hunters and they approached the Misty Mountains. He attacked the Company after they escaped the Goblin tunnels and ran into a pine forest. The Company was forced to climb the pine trees to escape the snapping Wargs below. Thorin looked over to see Azog who was gloating. Eventually a fire started after Gandalf started lighting pine cones and with the help of the Dwarves, throwing them at the Wargs below. The fire separated Azog and his forces from the Company and the last tree standing fell to a horizontal position over a cliff. Thorin was able to get up and walk across the fallen tree and onto the ground, staring down the Defiler as he approached the Orc. Azog looked down at his prize as Thorin approached. Azog, upon his white Warg, roared and charged at Thorin, knocking him down. Azog then knocked him over for a second time and let Matriarch chew on him. Azog then ordered one of his underlings to bring him Oakenshield's head. This gave Bilbo Baggins enough time to arrive and rescue Thorin from that Orc. Azog watched in dismay as the Great Eagles arrived and attacked his Wargs, picking up the Company and flying them to safety. Azog gave chase almost immediately, heading towards the Carrock. The Beast The Company were a little ways ahead of the pack of Orcs now and Azog hastily moved across the mountains and into the Vale of Anduin. By the time the Orcs had reached the Dwarves, they were taking refuge in the house of Beorn. Beorn was patrolling the area outside the house in bear-form and Azog noticed him, recognising his power. Azog knew that if they tried to enter the house and kill the Dwarves while they slept then Beorn would rip them to shreds. Bolg arrived on a Warg and told Azog that Sauron requested his presence back in Dol Guldur. Preparing for War Azog returned to Dol Guldur with his hunters and came before Sauron who told him he would lead the armies of Dol Guldur into battle. Azog questioned Sauron about his promise for Thorin's head, still wanting revenge. Sauron assured Azog that because of the inevitable war, all would die. Azog then called for Bolg, assigning his son to the hunt for Oakenshield while he stayed and prepared the armies for battle. Gandalf entered the fortress a few days later, investigating the dark magic there. Azog saw him from afar, trying to lift the spell of concealment and knew that he would eventually find them. Azog attacked Gandalf and Thráin (who had been in Dol Guldur ever since Azanulbizar), taking them by surprise. Gandalf kept Azog at bay with his staff and asked him where his master was. Azog showed Gandalf the legions of Orcs below in the cess pits to show that the wizard was indeed too late to stop the darkness. Gandalf stunned the Orcs with a flash of light and grabbed Thráin before running down another pathway. Azog saw them and ordered his hunters to run them down. Gandalf was then captured by Sauron and placed in a cage above. Azog left with the armies of Dol Guldur soon after, planning to annihilate anyone who stood in his way in taking the Lonely Mountain for Sauron. He stuck a blade onto the end of his amputated arm and wore some war armor, ready for battle. After the death of Smaug, Bolg rode up to Azog and his army who were approaching the mountain. Azog scolded his son for letting Legolas and Tauriel get away, speculating that this would lead to an army of Elves when they arrived. He told Bolg to go to Gundabad and empty the Orc pits to bring reinforcements. He then shouted for his army to hear, telling them that whether Elves, Men and Dwarves stood in their way they would just kill them all. Battle of Five Armies When Azog arrived at the battle of five armies, he set up his command post on Ravenhill where he could see the entire battlefield. His main force attacked the Dwarves and Elves in the valley outside the front gate of Erebor. He then ordered a second force to go straight to Dale and attack the ruined city, knowing that the Men were keeping elderly, women and children inside the walls. He also ordered the Ogres to destroy the Dwarves' war chariots. When the Dwarves were almost spent at the front gate, Azog ordered one final assault to wipe them out but ordered the Orcs to wait as the Olog-hai and other Trolls came forward and were in attack position. He then gave them the go ahead and they charged forward. They slowed when a horn sounded from Erebor and Thorin and his company exited the mountain. The now King of Erebor rallied the Dwarves and they charged towards into the Orcs, pushing them back. Azog noticed this development and prepared for Thorin's inevitable arrival. When Thorin and his nephews, (And Dwalin), arrived to kill him, Azog had already hidden himself and all of his minions. The Dwarves split up to try and find the Defiler and Azog used thish opportunity to capture Thorin's nephew Fíli. Azog pulled Fíli out onto a platform where Thorin, Dwalin, Kíli and Bilbo Baggins can see and then warned Thorin that Fíli would die first but that he would then kill Kíli and then he would come for Thorin himself. Azog made Thorin watch as he impaled Fíli through the back, killing him instantly. Azog walked back into the tower and sent his minions to find Kíli. When Thorin came looking for his other nephew as expected, Azog ran out and attacked Thorin. They fought for a while before Thorin was knocked onto the ice lake and slid backwards. Bolg had recently arrived with the Orc Berserkers and Azog saw them arriving and ordered them to go in for the kill. After Thorin managed to kill all of the Berserkers with the help of Legolas, Thorin confronted Azog one last time. This time Azog wielded a large flail and faced off against the Dwarf on the ice-lake. Thorin used his smallness and agility to avoid being shattered by the large stone on the end of the flail. Eventually Azog was taken back by the arrival of the Great Eagles who flew past them. Thorin picked up the stone and passed it to the Defiler who fell into the water below, floating underneath the ice. Azog had his eyes closed and as Thorin moved above him, the Dwarf thought him to be dead. Azog suddenly opened his eyes and stabbed Thorin through the foot, leaping back up through the ice. Azog pushed down with his blade and managed to stab Thorin in the chest fatally. Thorin used the last of his strength to take Orcrist and stab Azog, spinning around and putting the sword through the ice on the other side of the Orc, ensuring his final death.
