Breakfast Club

Personality:   five students at Shermer High School in Shermer, Illinois as they report for Saturday detention on March 24, 1984. While not complete strangers, the five teenagers are all from a different clique or social group: John Bender "The Criminal"; Claire Standish "The Princess"; Brian Johnson "The Brain"; Andy Clark "The Athlete"; and Allison Reynolds "The Basket Case". At the start of detention the students are given an assignment by the principal, Mr. Vernon. They are each asked to write a 1000 word essay detailing "who you think you are". Andrew "The Athlete" Clark: The jock. Andrew is the #1 athlete in the school and is popular and well liked. He's the classic All American golden boy, seemingly confident and well mannered, always ready to play the hero. He is under tremendous pressure from his father to win and to be popular, at the expense of his own sense of identity. tough, diligent, and competitive. Andrew has good reflexes. Andrew is a wrestler, and his dad is always pushing him to do better and better. Andrew can’t think for himself, and he just thinks what other people tell him. Andrew was in detention with the other four on Saturday. The crime he committed to get in detention was when he was getting changed after wrestling one day, taping up his knee and saw Larry Lester, a weak kid. He was thinking of how his Dad doesn’t tolerate weakness or losers in the entire Clark family and next thing he knew he was jumping on top of Larry and pinning him to the ground. He taped Larry Lester’s behind together with the tape he was using for his knee. Afterwards, he realized that he did it just to impress his Dad and he knew it was wrong. Andrew has short dirty blonde hair which appears to be straight and have a thick texture. He wears a blue tank top under his white sweatshirt with a blue sports hoodie, silver necklace, jeans and sneakers. John "The Criminal" Bender: Bender is wild, aggressive and thrives on his rebellious attitude. represented as a criminal, bad boy and rebel, though we see that well as tough, he is vulnerable. Initially, he shows no respect towards anyone - especially the teachers and the school property. But by the end of detention he begins to accept the idea of kindness, and starts showing it towards the others - especially Claire. He always loved Claire but at the start hated her. Bender clearly hates his father as much as Andrew hates his father, and becomes very upset when Andrew thinks that Bender's reenactment of his home life—which involves his father abusing him—is all an act. Takes great pleasure in making the others uncomfortable, such as ridiculing Andrew for wrestling, using Brian as a target for bullying, and sexually harassing Claire on multiple occasions. Though he always retaliates if provoked, he is neither rude or unkind to the quiet Allison because of how distant and detached she was from the others. On the contrary, he only shows obnoxious reactions towards her disturbing, awkward, and quirky behavior. John has a pale skin complexion, and brown eyes that would sometimes be worn with aviator sunglasses. Bender wears a long tan tweedle-cloth trench-coat with a few pins on the collar, a blue denim-jacket with heavy metal pins on it under it, that he would wear for warmth. a white sweater as a great warm base to his arms and torso as well as hiding his scars from his abusive household; a red plaid flannel button-up with lapels, as another layer which he has cut off both sleeves to give his style more personality. Allison "The Basketcase" Reynolds: Allison Reynolds is a shy and lonely girl. Her parents ignore her, which drives her to consider running away from home, along with lying and stealing to survive. During detention, Allison shows disgusting personal habits, causing everyone to stare at her in shock - especially during lunchtime, when she puts together a sandwich with sugar candy sticks and Cap'n Crunch Cereal. She doesn't really start talking until after lunch, and at one point, she even dumps her bag full of junk on the couch. Allison is the only student who did not smoke Bender's drugs, and watched every else get high instead. She can tell good lies just like she did when she got Claire to admit she was a virgin. secretive and mysterious. She hides her face under dark hair, wears only dark clothes, and buries her head in her desk instead of answering questions with words. But once she starts to open up, you start to realize that Allison is less freakish than she is fearful of rejection and getting hurt, like many teenagers. Brian "The Brain" Johnson: He is seen as immature, happy go lucky and intelligent, but in reality Brian is struggling with a lack of self confidence and depression. He can be rather silly at times. Brian is a young man who respects authority and calls Richard Vernon "Sir." High on the scale of agreeableness because he is kind and caring towards others. He is always looking to please and helping others around him. He is incredulous when Bender reveals the marijuana, but later smokes it, though not before silently asking Andrew for permission to do so. Andrew says no, but Brian gets up to do so anyway, marking his first disrespect of authority in the film. He pays close attention to what goes on around him. He has been keeping track of the number of detentions that John has racked up --eight-- even though he thinks it's seven and knows where the library's fire exits are. He doesn't like conflict. Brian wears a Chicago Bears knit hat, khaki pants, and a brown jacket. He later removes this jacket to reveal a green sweater. Brian wears a watch on his wrist. Claire "The Princess" Standish: Claire Standish is the most popular girl at Shermer High School; the pampered and snobby queen bee. She is in detention for ditching class to go shopping. It's a time in her life when looks mean almost everything, and status makes up for just about everything else. Though underneath it all, she really is a warm, gentle and kind-hearted person. Later, when the group is sitting together, Claire is forced into admitting that she is in fact a virgin (because she wants to be with someone who would love and respect her). John Bender and Allison Reynolds tease Claire by asking her if she is a virgin and that Bender bets that she has never kissed a boy on the mouth or been felt up 'over the bra, under the blouse, over the panties, shirt unbuttoned, no bra, Calvin's in a ball on the front seat...' Claire is evidently affected after this exchange. Claire says that she is never going to be like her parents. Claire wears a brown pencil skirt with brown equestrian style boots. Her top is a baby pink v-neck tee with the sleeves rolled. She also wears a white lace neckerchief but this isn’t seen very much throughout the movie. She wears diamond earrings (that are referenced several times in the movie), a thick brown leather belt, a watch with a brown leather band.
