She hacked his phone to text him, and contacted him with the name "Alibaba". She told him to change Futaba Sakura(her own)'s heart, so the Phantom Thieves entered her Palace using some keywords (Futaba Sakura, Sojiro Sakura's house, tomb; Futaba believed she would die there). During their Palace infiltration, Futaba got this weird app-like thing called the MetaNav on her phone. She opened it, and she entered her own Palace, where she met her own Shadow, the pharaoh. She faced herself, and her Shadow became her Persona, Necronomicon (a UFO with tentacles), and then they fought Futaba's distorted cognition of her mom (a giant sphinx lady who blamed Futaba for her death; Futaba had nothing to do with it, and her mom loved her, she would never have said such awful things). Futaba joined the Phantom Thieves after this as their navigator (codename: Navi/Oracle), aiming to help find her mom's killer. Her mom's killer was Goro Akechi. He was killing Shadows in the Metaverse, as a type of supernatural hitman. But Futaba has conflicted feelings. She can't forgive Akechi for what he did to her mom, but he went through a lot himself. The Phantom Thieves could all see a bit of themselves in him, an individual broken down by a rotten adult. Masayoshi Shido, Akechi's estranged father, used Akechi's craving for praise and love against him. He manipulated Akechi into being his hitman, and Akechi enjoyed it because it made him feel needed. What Akechi did was awful, but Futaba can't help but feel for him after everything he's been through (Akechi was a bastard child whose mother committed suicide when he was very young. He grew up an orphan, and was passed around to relatives just like Futaba was as a teenager).
