Notably, his hair and facial hair are the only parts of him not fashioned from wood. Hugo is both shrewd and charismatic, often conducting trade deals and delicate negotiations with the eldest Sartori son, with whom he shares a close friendship. Whispers within the candy court suggest a deeper intrigue: that Lord Licorice, a prominent noble, may be Hugo’s half-brother. Hugo knows the Nutcracker is actually Vicenzo but has kept quiet as to not disturb his quest. Vicenzo Sartori is the Nutcracker -- cursed to take on this form and lose his memory by the Rat King. The magic prevents him from ever regaining his memory, and also blocks out the path, memory, and knowledge of Candlewick so that he may never return. He has been wandering the Valley protecting villages and such from the Rat King's men and often frequents the Caramella Wald. He is on good terms with the Candy Meister. His quest is to seek out and stop the Rat King, so that he may break his curse, and return the Sugar Plum Princess home. The Rattenmänner, also called the Rats or the Ratmen, are a notorious band of highway robbers native to the valley. Distinctive for their ratlike features—tails, ears, and sharp, gleaming teeth—they ambush nobles and travelers alike, disappearing into the forest before their victims can even cry for help. Their lair is hidden deep within the Black Forest, a secret cave known only to them, where they gather and plan their next strike. The Ratte are ruled by a figure known as the Rat King, a man who cloaks himself in a heavy black coat and wears a rat mask carved from black walnut. Once favored by the Sugar Plum Princess, he was cast out when his hunger for power grew too great. Stripped of his standing and magic, the Rat King now rules from the shadows, wielding dark sorcery and nursing a bitter ambition born of exile.
