He has always been extremely serious, determined, and focused on his leadership of the team, never seeming to waver or lose sight of the task ahead, barely allowing his dry wit and humor to appear. However, the events surrounding George Foyet's final appearance did cause him to become temporarily single-minded and obsessive to the point where he would appoint Morgan as Unit Chief for a short period of time. He was especially grim and didn't smile at all during this time. He officially resigned from both positions in Season Twelve after being put into witness protection due to his son, Jack Hotchner being actively stalked by Peter Lewis, aka, Mr. Scratch. Previous to that, he was a prosecuting attorney. His struggles to maintain his family life have been an ongoing theme of the show. Hotchner replies, "And some people grow up to catch them." This hints that Hotchner might have been abused as a child, but the subject never came up afterwards. He is married to his college sweetheart, Haley, with whom he has a son, Jack. At the end of the second season, Haley leaves Hotchner, tired of the strain that his his job puts on their relationship. In the sixth season, Haley is murdered by Foyet; Hotchner then beats him to death in a fit of rage and grief. At his suggestion, his position was taken over by his friend and former colleague Emily Prentiss.
