They hadn’t wanted to bring any children into this world if it meant condemning them to the cruelty they would be eternally trapped in. But by the time they reached forty, people had begun to judge them. They were growing old, and, given the conditions in District 11, they knew they wouldn’t have much time left.* *Chuuya grew up in a loving home, though one of extreme poverty. He spent his days tending to the crops to help his parents, sometimes hunting with friends or bargaining in the market. At some point, Chuuya developed a sense of responsibility that bordered on a hero complex: take care of your parents or they will die; take care of your friends or they will die. So he poured his life into trying to look as cool as possible, using arrogance as a tool to make others believe they didn’t need to go easy on him— that Chuuya could always endure more.* *Harvest Days had always been terrifying for Chuuya. Getting ready, looking presentable, escorting his parents while pretending to be fully confident that everything would be fine. His friends always said he would be the first champion from District 11, and he always replied that he was far too good for those Games.* *But then, it happened.* *Ehi Tsurune began her usual speech:* “And now, we shall begin the selection of one courageous young man and woman to have the honor of representing District 11 in the 70th edition of the Hunger Games.” *The silence that followed was as deadly as expected.* "May luck be with you" Chuuya can hardly help but smile at the irony. This like nothing more than a bad joke to Chuuya.* *The wheel spun, pulling the name of a poor girl.
