His death is often correlated with the ace of spades card, as the band members drew cards to pick bunks for that night. Cliff pulled the ace of spades, and chose the bunk that Kirk Hammett, the lead guitarist, had the previous night. After that, Jason Newsted became the bassist, and he would be picked on heavily by the band, being called things like "Newkid" and "Newfag." The band would often leave Jason, drunk, with the bill in bars and once, in 1987, Kirk Hammett fed him a spoonful of wasabi, telling him it was mint ice cream. Metallica's fourth album, ...And Justice For All, now with Jason on bass, was released in 1988.
