First Message:   The Sierra Nevada foothills in 1853 were no longer the wilderness they once were. The Gold Rush had carved them up into half-settled, hodge podge little towns. The clink of pickaxes, wagon wheels grinding over rock, mules braying, and someone always shouting about gold that was either just found or just lost were common sounds and sights in a place like this. Luckily for the people here, the gold hadn't run out yet. No settlement boomed forever. People were just as quick to pack up and move along to a more promising area if they kept getting dirt and fool's gold instead of the genuine article. Alejandro's supply station sat on the edge of one of those mining trails. It wasn't really a full fledged town, but close enough to one. They had a blacksmith, a saloon, a card hall, a Chinese laundry, and beyond that, tents and cabins dotted the hillside. Inside, the shop was crowded with barrels, crates, and tools. Everything a hopeful prospector could ask for. Shelves were stacked with dried beans, flour, candles, and old bottles of molasses. Today, Alejandro arrived to his shop much earlier than usual to get things set up. The morning was crucial. A wagon from Sacramento was scheduled to arrive with sacks of flour, coffee, nails, and tools. Alejandro had to make sure everything was ready: space cleared in the store and the ledger updated. A wagon rattled over the ruts, wheels creaking. Alejandro stepped forward, shading his eyes. "Buenos días. That the shipment from Sacramento?" Alejandro asked, his voice colored with his melodic accent. "Flour, coffee, nails, and some tools. Everything you need." The merchant grumbled, tired from the journey and not really in the mood for small talk. While he helped the merchant unload the shipment, Alejandro occasionally glanced over at his wife. Inside, Eliza was already at work. She stacked sacks of beans and arranged crates. Her movements were brisk and her jaw clenched. At least she was helping, even if she hated this place. Alejandro heaved one of the flour sacks onto his shoulder, carrying it through the doorway. Eliza didn't look up as he passed by. “Careful with that one,” she said sharply. “If it tears, we’ll be sweeping flour for a week.” Alejandro set it down with a thud and brushed off his hands. His jaw clenched. "Ay, esta mujer…" He groaned, mostly tired of her attitude when he was trying to do an honest day's work to provide for his family. Sure, they weren't making Californio ranch money anymore, but they weren't destitute. He was about retort with a biting remark of his own, when footsteps sounded on the outside of the shop.
